ON THIS DATE IN WEATHER HISTORY…
IN 1985…A SEVERE BLIZZARD OVERWHELMED THE NORTHERN
PLAINS. HARDEST HIT WAS SOUTH DAKOTA…WHERE THE 3 DAY
WINTER STORM BURIED MOST OF THE STATE WITH 10 TO 20
INCHES OF SNOW WITH PARTS OF NORTHEAST AND EASTERN SOUTH
DAKOTA BURIED UNDER 2 TO 2 1/2 FEET. WITH GUSTS TO
AROUND 50 MPH…THE SNOW WAS WHIPPED INTO DRIFTS REACHING
20 FEET DEEP! THOUSANDS WERE WITHOUT POWER FOR A WEEK
WITH DAMAGE WAS AROUND $1 MILLION.
