Oklahoma sets state record for tornadoes in April with 52, according to the National Weather Service

The preliminary Oklahoma tornado count for 2012 stands at 61 twisters, said Rick Smith, warning coordination meteorologist with the National Weather Service, Norman. Only four of those were in May, which is usually the most active month.

The latest count for April is 52 confirmed tornadoes, Smith said Thursday. That breaks Oklahoma’s record for that month based on records back to 1950. The previous record was 50 twisters in April last year.
