We recently moved back to Western OR after a 3 year stay in OKC. One of the things that amazes me is that none of the Central OK emergency response agencies use tire chains to prevent their vehicles from getting stuck in deep snow. I've just read the update on police cars and ambulances and Engine 9 (our primary response fire unit) getting stuck.

We don't get as much snow here in the Willamette Valley, but when it's anticipated, most city, county and state police, fire, EMS, public works and bus agencies will chain up their vehicles, in addition to laying down sand and de-icer compound. Result: they get stuck only occaisionally.

If OKC or the counties are worried about the cost, Les Schwab Tires here in OR might be willing to give them the same deal they give the general public; buy chains now and if you don't use them by April 1st (or is it April 15?), return them for a full refund.

That was how I was able to get up to OUHSC, pick up my wife and get home without any problems on Christmas Day 2009.
The small shovel and cat litter also helped at 1 or 2 spots.
Good luck, praying for you'all's safety.
