Snowfall in Oklahoma City, so far this winter, National Weather Service, Norman

From National Weather Service, Norman:

Where We Stand With Snowfall So Far

February 9, 2010 at 12:50pm CST

Having experienced several significant storms this winter, parts of western and central Oklahoma and western North Texas have seen their seasonal snowfall totals for 2009-2010 grow to considerable levels.  When we talk about seasonal snowfall totals we mean the amount of snow that falls over the course of the winter, rather than in a calendar year.  Below, you will see some of the statistics for this winter’s snowfall in Oklahoma City.  These figures will be updated over the next several months. Even after winter, numbers can be adjusted.

Oklahoma City (Records back to 1892-1893 winter)

  • 7th Highest Total Snowfall – 19.9″
  • The seasonal snowfall so far is the most since the 1987-1988 winter (22 years).
  • Snowiest December on Record – 14.0″, breaking the previous record of 9.0″ in 1914-1915
  • Record storm total snowfall – 13.5″ on December 24, 2009

In order to break the seasonal snowfall record, Oklahoma City would need to measure an additional 5.4 inches of snow.  Oklahoma City averages 8.6 inches of snow every winter, with 2.1 inches on average in February, and 0.7 inches in March.  Averages are computed using the 1971-2000 period of record.

The top  6 are:

No. 1 in Oklahoma City is 25.2 inches in 1947-48.

2. 24.4 inches, 1967-68

So how did our winter total out for the record books? and did any of the storm of March 20 count as winter snow? Over half the day was still technically a winter day since the sun crossed the equator after noon that day. Shouldn’t some of the snow count as winter snow? Also what were the snow totals for the other months of the winter- such as January February and March? Were any of the months other than December snowiest on record? How about March?

Mc Manus: When we talk “winter” snow, we are generally talking about the first day it snowed to the last day it snowed, regardless of whether it was December 21-March-21 or October 20-April 13.
So yes, all of it counted as winter snow. Although it doesn’t look like we will, we could still receive a snow that would put us over the Oklahoma City record of 25.2 in 1947-48.

Also what were the snow totals for the other months of the winter- such as January February and March?
