I am truly awestruck by the technological advances that we have gotten to so far this century. It’s amazing how far we have come even since I was born in 1992. I feel as if I grew up in such a technologically advanced society, yet my upbringing compared to what I see my little cousins up bringing is so technologically different. My 2 year old cousin knows how to play games on his parents’ iPhone. That in itself says something when compared to when I grew up my parents phone had one purpose and that was to call. It is definitely interesting how Watson won Jeopardy and really brings up the thought of how far will technology go before its finally enough!

It is definitely a fearful thought to think that one day the world will be taken over by technology and that humans simply will not exist any longer. Creating ways to make life simpler has been something that humans have been all about since the beginning of time, but the farther they get along the more off the deep end their thoughts get. I f they want to wipe the human race off the earth, then that just be what they will get unfortunately.

This article is definitely something to think about. However, I grew up in this whole computer age where humans are considered to only do half the work and be half as smart. In order for a computer to work, humans must input the data. I don’t know a lot about this particular subject, but I do believe that the one who inputs the data is much smarter than a computer could ever be and perhaps some humans. We have to learn how to keep up with what we are creating. I believe that competitions like the one featured on Jeopardy are educationally healthy. They show us how much we need to work on.

Wow, this is crazy to think about. For some reason, humankind has been obsessed with this notion of becoming an "ultimate" creator. I mean, Mary Shelley wrote Frankenstein in the early 1800s, and society's interest in this topic has only grown since. It makes me wonder why we are so bent on improving artificial intelligence, instead of looking to better the humanity that already exists. I don't think A.I. is necessarily a bad thing, it's just interesting how focused we are on it. My other question is, is it possible for the creation to know more or become more powerful than the creator? Logically, it seems as if this shouldn't happen, but I guess A.I. is testing the limits of that logic.

this subject really interests me. i am a computer information systems major and i have taken an A.I. class and i really find this stuff very interesting. in 1982 the Computer was named "Man of The Year" and Deep Blue, a computer programmed to play chess against grandmasters (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Deep_Blue_(chess_computer)) show that the world is definitely seeing the potential that computers can have in this world. i do not believe for a second that this is scary because as i learned about A.I. we are not only decades away from even thinking about simulating creation and sentient thought and emotions, if that is even possible, and even then, it is more likely the programmer will abandon the project because of financial concerns and/or frustration at bugs/glitches before "accidentally" creating a robot that takes over the world. so no i dont believe it should be scary, if anything im excited to see what they can do next.

Of everything presented in your blog, the most unnerving, yet not surprising tidbit of information was Time Magazine's cover story, in which reporter Lev Grossman quoted experts in saying that humans are only a few decades from the point where computers will become more intelligent than humans. While talking to a friend one evening, I came across a fun science and technology fact: "Knowledge is growing so fast that ninety percent of what we will know in fifty years time, will be discovered in those fifty years." My only question is, how do people set boundaries in order to control this immense wealth of knowledge? How do we restrict computers from creating a dystopian society in our lives (i.e. Facebook)? And what rules should be imposed to restrict computer censorship of our information, where the computer essentially takes away our ability to think for ourselves? Ray Bradbury's, "Fahrenheit 451" comes to mind. . .
