[...] John Rohde on OKC’s free throw competition: “When Kevin Durant and Kevin Martin rose to No. 1 and No. 2 in the NBA’s free-throw percentage standings last week, they started exchanging some playful banter back and forth. They would kid each other on the rare occasions they missed at the line. It was all in good fun in a race to find the superior Kevin. The fun is still there, but the kidding has stopped. You can blame it on Cleveland, where Durant went 13 for 17 (.765) in a 115-110 road loss to the Cavaliers last Saturday. “We’ve been calling each other out,” Martin admitted with a smile, “but (Monday) we decided we’re just going to go back to shooting free throws because he called me out and missed four and I missed one.” [...]

Competition is good for players against each other, if done in a correct way. It is good to some point, when they can develop themselves better to go against the best, but to over do it, by shooting until you can achieve your score as you would like it, that's bad.

In free throws that is good, because you want to be the best and the best doesn't want to be beaten and so they go on battling. I think the best player should be an all around player, rather than a one dimensional one. The likes of Michael Jordan, Larry Bird, Magic Johnson, Kareem Abdul Jabbar, Bill Russell and other hall of famers are most multi dimensional and plays two or more positions as the situation calls for.

Kevin Martin is a good plus for the Thunder, as he could stretch the defense outside, freeing Durant and the big players for doing their dunks. Although the Heat has done that last year's finals, that the Thunder's defense were late in defending the perimeter shots. The Thunder should look at the video of the teams that beat the Heat twice in the season to get idaes how they can do it. Its the coaches job to be aware that this time wouldn't happen just like last year!
