All Thunder players, and I’m not picking on Westbrook, need to understand they represent Clay Bennett, Sam Presti, Scott Brooks, season ticket holders, OKC, and Thunder fans everyhwere. Thunder leadership will take necessary action when dealing with young men making millions. It may not happen right away, but I would expect any player not fitting the Thunder mold will be gone. Most players get it, it appears a few don’t.

Sometimes Westbrook is a clown. Sometimes he goes over the top by his antics.

That’s also who he is.

Ever heard of the tennis player John McEnroe? He’s seems to be getting through life just fine. Grey haired and in his 50′s, McEnroe still acts up on the senior pro tour.

That’s who he is.

Dr. Crane, is your first name Frazier? If so, you’d be best served by sticking to humorous talk radio.

I’ve talked to Westbrook. In general he views sports media members as unknowledgeable and as sharks. Perhaps he’s hit a target.

Certainly Westbrook displays sharp edges. He’s driven, ambitious, demanding. He pushes himself and his teammates. Many of the edges will never disappear. That’s who he is.

Furthermore, he produces and produces. Yet he’s not yet reached his limit on the basketball floor. Forget about his ever mastering diplomacy. I don’t care. That’s not who he is.

I accept his willingness and production.

Of course I’ve roots in the Bronx. Westbrook’s style is nothing new.

I think Russ needs to understand that it will be a lot easier for him if he fronts the media with an assertive attitude rather than a passive-aggressive one. I am not surprised though, he is human and I see it all the time in my work. Russ is young, full of emotion, and lacks the social skills to deal effectively with the constant barrage of criticism he faces. His attitude fosters more criticism. In the Australian Football League (AFL) players do extensive media training and rarely if ever find themselves in situations where they are basically in denial and ignoring difficult questions. I’m not sure what happens with media training in the NBA but the club needs to help him to address his issues and take proper ownership of them. KD, Nick, and even Kendrick, to some extent, have the more natural media and people skills that Russ can EASILY learn. And Darnell, I think you’re overly negative at times; find some balance between over-the-top praise and harsh criticism and we’ll all be better off.

I was recently came across the name Rony Seikaly, he was an NBA center
in the 90′s for a while, and grinned at my long tenure as a Golden State Warriors fan -
I had completely repressed memory of those teams coming after the Run TMC era – Rony and Bimbo Coles and thankfully I forget the rest…just to say, watching a game was a grim experience, for years.

These Thunder teams treat a basketball fan to jaw dropping moments a dozen times a game.
One can only laugh at the level of play and accomplishment. They rise to occasions, they grow, they continually strive, they redefine, they come through or they leave it on the floor. They go 35 and 11 “bad bad memories” and all. Is there a single team that looks forward to playing them? Just last year we got to see generationally great performances – Harden shooting down the Spurs, Westbrook’s game 4 in the Finals, Thabo’s Havlicek strip of Wade in the last minute of Game 3…

Its funny when fans demand and expect exceptional performances that must adhere to a homogenous, hypocritical and made up set of standards of what good team citizenship is.
Its worse when journalists do that, and these are D minus league stories.

Never, big Red, did I ever ask if Westbrook committed a crime. I did, however, say, Now you decide the degree of sin Westbrook committed, a suggestion that the accounts of the Westbrook episode didn’t, in my mind, rise to the embellishment of other reporters and commentators.

But people make matters into whatever they want.

A temper fit, a temper tantrum, an antic, any of them could fit the Westbrook occasion. Yet, in Westbrook’s case, I deemed wise that he walked away to cool off for a minute or so, on a reason I stated.

I play a sport at a high level, and for a fiery competitor it’s hard to always control the fire.
