[...] Darnell Mayberry: “Daniel Orton will make his debut Tuesday. He’ll split time with Hasheem Thabeet behind Cole Aldrich. That worries me. Thabeet got the backup center minutes in the first two games, but Orton has to split time with Thabeet in the third game. What’s up with that? Methinks it’s pretty telling regarding where the team stands on Orton v. Thabeet. There will be four preseason games remaining after Tuesday, so there’s plenty of minutes left to be had. But cuts will begin soon, and if Orton doesn’t get much time I think that shows where he is in the pecking order.” [...]

Now that we've got Serge locked up for the next couple years I think it's time to give him some touches in the post and take our lumps if necessary as he learns. It can't turn out much worse than feeding Perk down there as they did so often last season to start the game (the Perk Punt play as it came to be called). And if he CAN get it and become effective on the low block, well, that'd would be a huge deal for this team.

Lynn, working in the post is one of the most difficult things to do in basketball. It takes footwork, balance, timing, patience, strength and court awareness among many other things to be successful on the block. Shaq didn't have much of a low post arsenal to go to. He only had a move or two and a counter. But he bullied defenders down there. Dwight Howard doesn't have many moves at all. Those are the best two big men of the past 20 years. That should tell you all you need to know about why guys like Kendrick Perkins, Cole Aldrich, Hasheem Thabeet, Daniel Orton, Serge Ibaka and many, many others are slow to develop in that area. -DM-
