Here it is 12/31 and I just read an article how this guy has yet to suit up for the Rockets because he doesn’t agree with their plan for his mental health and has refused his D League assignment. I think Darnell has been vindicated because he sounds like the definition of a head case to me. Does Houston have any recourse to cancel his contract and recover any of their money?

C’mon Darnell, really dude? I get your point – the risk/reward with Royce might not be worth the gamble. You just chose a very poor way to go about it. The guy has a bonafide mental illness, and you label him a “headcase”. Beyond classless. As a C’s fan I was sorry to see Royce get taken off the board before we had a shot at him. I think the risk is well worth it, he’s one helluva a baller. I think he’ll be a solid pro in the right situation. Clearly OKC isn’t that place.

btw I found this story through CBS Sports… might want to consider apologizing before this gets much more out of hand.

I understand the context that this article was meant to be presented in, but it was poorly articulated. Additionally, the context in which mental illness was described and ridiculed is insensitive at best, and ignorant and shameful in the more likely case. Regardless of the attempt to indicate that people are taking the post out of context, an apology for general tone, and implication that even a remote understanding of Royce White should be given. Without that, the defense of context is meaningless.

The article has generated quite a bit of national press–all negative. Article is unfortunate, misguided and even inaccurate (if the national articles and posts here are accurate). Also not getting the connection–he was not available in the draft when Thunder selected, so why the speculation about what Thunder would not have done when it was never presented with the situation.

This is absolutely unacceptable and just plain disrespectful. How is it wrong to badmouth to the physically handicapped but it’s okay to belittle the guy with mental issues? This is equivalent to laughing at the guy in the wheelchair who is late for work because he couldn’t make it up the stairs.

And Darnell being a person of color clearly shows the unaddressed issues with depression in the African-American community. The “just suck it up and get over it” mentality towards depression and mental illness is the same attitude he would probably feel offended by when it came to other issues.

Been a supporter of your work for some time but you just lost a loyal reader. I’m sure you’re bathing in the attention right now so I doubt you would care, my brother.
