Wow, this column should be renamed, "Me talking about being in the same vicinity of various celebrities this past weekend."

No offense, but no one really cares how close you were to Common or that you could see some random player from a distance.

Also, just curious as to how the reaction might be different to describing the All-Star weekend as "hood" and reeking of marijuana might be different if the columnist was white.

[...] Darnell Mayberry: “An increasing number of Thunder fans are clamoring for an All-Star gala in Oklahoma City. But Oklahoma City is not ready for All-Star Weekend. And it has nothing to do with the lack of hotel rooms in the city, as NBA commissioner David Stern has repeatedly stated. This is a weekend that is extremely, hmmm, how shall I put this, urban. Some would call it “hood.” There is a lot of extracurricular centered on All-Star Weekend. It’s not just about the game and the exposure the city gets. Thousands of people descend upon the host city each year, many of them unlike the majority of the 18,203 that fill the Peake every night. When you sign up for All-Star Weekend, you sign up for blaring music emitting from souped-up cars until 4 a.m., you sign up for half-naked women strolling the streets, you sign up for marijuana smoke polluting the air and, sometimes, you sign up for violence. Don’t misunderstand me. Those are not stereotypes about any particular demographic. Those are facts. And Oklahoma City, as a community, appears a long ways away from wanting to roll out the red carpet to welcome that reality.” Share: [...]

People said the same thing about Indianapolis hosting a super bowl. Indy did an excellent job. So much so, I'm optimistic about another SB there im the future. I thought I had missed a once in a lifetime chance to see a SB in my home stadium.

Now, of course, Indy is like, the 10th largest city in the country, and okc is not even close, but...still. the people go wherever the game is.

Also, I enjoyed watching the game last night. It was the first all-star game i've ever cared to watch. still hate #6, always will.

As always I love your nuggets...nudge, nudge, wink, wink.

The dunk contest needs star power. Until we get the big names competing the dunk contest will continue to be underwhelming.

As spectacular as Jordan's dunk contests were he was a better in game dunker, LeBron's excuse is pathetic.

You are absolutely right about the two ball dunk, if Griffin or Howard had done it we'd be seeing it until we puked. Even the most mundane dunk performed by someone that has a large fan base will generate buzz.

We certainly don't need TNT mucking it up with false hype. The theatrics have to go, the made up 'dunk intensity' meter was a joke. I remember the Vince Carter contest they had a graphic that charted vertical leap and Vince Carter had the shortest but he may have had the single best performance ever.

And honestly, the old contests with Jordan and Wilkins weren't that spectacular in terms of dunks. The drama was created because there were two legitimate stars going at each other not a bunch of players who will likely not make an All-Star team.
