Jersey contest and Sonics notes

Updating a previous post, in light of Tuesday’s news that OSU made a coaching change in its men’s basketball program, we will not run the best jerseys and logos for OKC’s prospective NBA team in next Monday’s Main Event section. It will run the following Monday the 14th.

In other news, look for a segment on the Sonics on TNT tonight during its NBA double-header. The station sent a camera crew to Seattle to film the grassroots effort by the Save Our Sonics fans to try to keep the team in Seattle. Should be an interesting piece.

Also, a second group of Seattle businessmen, led by former Sonic “Downtown” Freddy Brown, has come forward and this time proposed a $1 billion arena project. The group doesn’t have a financing plan or location options. But the project looks pretty impressive. The Seattle Times has a full report here and here, including a column by Steve Kelley.

Speaking of Fred Brown, is it me or does dude sort of look like Chubby Checker?

i was just listening to seattle sports radio, and they had the guy who is leading this proposal(i believe his name is beam). apparently he already has the funding. whatever that means? if this project goes through, it would be the most beautiful basketball, hockey, convention center, concert hall, etc., in the world!
it would become as iconic as the space needle. it would far surpass these bare minimum, half ass, very soon to be out dated current arenas(ford center, key arena and just about every other arena).
and this whole thing will be privately funded. 1 billion dollars! like i just said, i just heard the guy say, the whole thing is already paid for. we will see.

dm, dissing downtown freddie brown, is not cool!

(Joey, you’re nitpicking. I didn’t diss him. He looks like Chubby Checker. Period. That’s no disrespect. -DM-)

Agree with Joey. No okie should diss Freddie Brown. How is it ok to steal a city’s franchise and simultaneously disrespect their stars? Classy. Consider me underwhelmed by your appreciation for the game. You should probably be kissing his ass. Right about now I’d be dissing OKC’s pro sports heroes too, but… well, you know.

hey dm, i look like brad pitt. and if somebody points that out, i dont mind. but chubby checker, thats just mean.
and by the way, i was really just kidding.
oh, i like the new guy “mark”. he is comin out swingin! keep it up!!

(Yeah, Mark is firing on all cylinders isn’t he? But, for the record, I don’t think Chubby Checker is a bad looking guy. In fact, I think he is a good-looking guy to be 66. Again, the original post was no disrespect to Fred Brown. -DM-)

I don’t think you are qualified to speak of “downtown” Fred Brown when your city lacks the diversity, culture, and history of a downtown. Mark, Oklahoma does have a rich history of professional rodeo. Come on, don’t sell them short.

I’ll stand up for D.M. on this one.

Downtown Freddy Brown is a bonified legend and if he had “dis’ed” him i’d be the first to bring a rope, but in pictures I can see the connection. In person you would never make it however.

To be clear about the “Emerald City Center” proposal is that it would be privately funded and that is a huge problem with the NBA. They do not want people building arenas with their own money because that makes bleeding taxpayers for open ended funding like they are getting in OKC much tougher to do.

It is an amazing proposal, one that would be the best in the NBA, but with the complete failure of David Stern to show any leadership it is unlikely that great vision like this would ever come to pass. With the legal nightmare that is about to be unleashed on the league Seattle will be keeping the Sonics but are also forced to upgrade Key Arena rather then be able to take the time to flesh out a major project like this.

Stern needs to resign, he clearly has let his personal hurt feelings prevent him from working for the best interest of the league. His time has passed and now someone with real vision and leadership needs to take over.

While it’s amusing that you have an entire blog dedicated to a fictional NBA team I would ask you to show some respect for the franchise you will presumably support should they ever step foot in OKC. There is a legacy of people and players that laid the foundation for 41 years of success that is allowing you to hijack the cherished sports memories of an entire metropolitan area, and I think you owe them a basic level of respect. As far as I can tell this blog is dedicated to the greatness of David Stern and Clay Bennett. That doesn’t qualify you as a basketball fan in my book.

is there any truth saying stern would not be happy, with a privately funded stadium? or is that just conspiracy talk?

That Freddie Brown is a very funny guy…..

” We don’t have a place to build anything and we don’t have any money but we wanted to call a press conference to show everyone these cool pictures”

This was the best April fools joke I’ve ever seen.

To the Seattle people that have posted here just wanted to say:

Thank you so much for your interest in our local paper and its blog. We very much enjoy your insightfullness and input. We hope you come visit our fair city when the Sonics relocate here in the very near future. Good luck in either privately financing or refurbishing KeyArena in order to one day attract another NBA or NHL franchise to your city. We are thrilled to welcome the Sonics franchise, its players and our local ownership group to town and will be sure to hold up thank you signs during our sold-out games.

your decrepit city will not be able to sustain a franchise. they will be gone within ten years!

we is a big league city now! yee haw!

it will never happen.

Durant and Greens first year in the league and they’re playing in front of a half empty arena.

They won’t miss Seattle…..

but theyz willz love that big league city!! no doubt!!

JOEY
