Interesting article
A good article in the Wall Street Journal today on the inventors of the basketball Web site Hoopshype.com. Like many sports writers and NBA followers in general, I check this Web site daily. For those of you who might not be familiar with it, it’s a great site to spend five minutes on every day, glancing through the “rumors” section which gives a thorough offering of national and international reports on all things NBA.
As the article points out, “The pro basketball Web site has influenced player moves, stoked rivalries and now attracts more than a half-million unique visitors a month after starting from scratch in 2002. NBA coaches read it to check on their job status, and rumors posted there have put trades in motion.”
Unbeknownst to me before reading this article, the creators of the site are three 29-year-old men from Spain. Their success story makes for the perfect “Why didn’t I think of that?”
Also, Hornets fans might find it interesting that the site allegedly brought about the 2005 trade of Jamaal Magloire to the Milwaukee Bucks in exchange for Desmond Mason. I remember the day that trade happened like it was yesterday, how happy Magloire was when he learned the news at a morning shoot-around, how he giddily began saying goodbye to his teammates on that October morning before bolting out of the Ford Center for good before ever playing a regular season game in Oklahoma City.
I had never heard the story of how the Web site sparked the trade as the WSJ article details until I read it. I’m not sure I believe it but it’s plausible. Ironically enough, as a rare reader of the WSJ, I only learned of the article through the rumors section of Hoopshype.

The founders of hoopshype didn’t think of hoopshype, either. The site is patterned after http://www.insidehoops.com, which had already been called “a haven for pro basketball junkies” by Sports Illustrated and had a recommended NBA rumors page by Yahoo Internet Life a full year before hoopshype even existed
phillip, do you think there is any class in bunch peasants, trying to play with the big boys! know your place!!
Poor, pathetic, little joey.
I have to tell you joey, I’ve enjoyed every second of watching Seattle being schooled by a group of OKC’s finest.
The good news is Seattle will go from having the worst arena in the NBA, to having one of the worst arenas in the NBDL.
Good luck with that……
phillip, as you can see by mr. stern’s change in attitude, we will always have a team. the question remains, do you get the sonics?? and do you get them next year?? this will be answered in june! stern wants nothing to do with a trial, as he has already stated he will bleed with clay-boy’s losses, also. there is so much the NBA does not want the public to see. yes, it is the worst lease in the NBA, but, pretty smart on our part to get the most money for our building. there are so many buildings to lease in your fine city now that GM has left, phillip, that you wouldnt know about the cost of a high-end building. you can lease anything in okie city for peanuts. over here with so many jobs, and, people making tons of money at these jobs, we have high-end leases. the fault lies with the former ownership group who signed the lease. they were the dumba$$’s!! as far as, joey being on your site, we here in seattle fighting for our team, have taken this to a national level. my UPS buddies in miami are just shaking thier heads at your fine city, and, one of them is from cushing. his response over all this is, we as citizens in oklahoma never wanted a team this way, and, certainly did not want to show our state off as so poor to make any kind of history of thier own, with an expansion team, they have to welfare of another great world-class city!! phillip, you keep eating that fine food at one of your classier eateries (golden corral), and, you will not have any brain cells left!LOL! SEE YA IN JUNE!! wait a minute, at $5.15 per hour, phillip cant afford to come to Seattle in june. dont worry, you have a classy reporter named Darrell, who will fill you in when he gets back. TO BAD ITS GOING TO BE NEWS YOU DO NOT WANT TO HEAR PHILLIP!!!
love,
mike u.
mike u, i’m going to do you a favor. it’s obvious you can’t make a point without insulting oklahoma, but your references are laim. here’s a few funnier, more topical things to make fun of (if you won’t try harder, i will):
crystal meth problem (not as bad as it used to be, but not good)
OU sooners choking constantly in every sport
terrible road conditions
quality beer available only in liquor stores
sally kern
now look, i love oklahoma, but every state has problems. and if i have to read comments by small-minded people, i at least want to read something new and original now and then. please try harder seattle, thank you.

Hey Darnell, Did you notice that you’re the topic of a thread by the admin. on the SOS website?

The whole premise is pretty funny. Considering the miserable results they’ve had with these kind of things in the past, I can see why they would be trying to distance themselves from it.
(Philip, yes I did see that. Brian Robinson has the right to voice his opinion. -DM- )
