Choc announces second homebrew competition
Choc Beer Co. this week announced the return in 2011 of its Brew at Choc’s Home homebrew contest. Because it’s a lot easier than me giving you the whole run-down,
here’s the news release Choc put out to explain the contest:
(First, an aside: You’ll notice that Choc is limiting the beer style for next year’s contest. Brewmaster Michael Lalli said they are doing that because, “We wanted the competition to be more focused, we love smoked beers, and they are not widely available. Limiting the competition to smoked beers means smoked beer lovers will access to this great style on a yearly basis.” So there you go.)
Brew at Choc’s Home 2011
A Homebrew Competition
Brew at Choc’s Home is back for another year! We want to thank everyone who participated in the inaugural competition. The winning beer for 2010, Signature Smoked Porter, by Jeff Swearengin of Tulsa, Oklahoma is currently available across Choc’s distribution network. We are excited to receive and judge another great group of beers. The grand prize is a chance to scale up your recipe, brew it in Choc’s 15 barrel brew house, and then have your beer entered in the Pro-Am category at the 2011 Great American Beer Festival (GABF)!
The rules have changed a little from last year:
Eligibility:
- The competition is limited to Oklahoma residents.
- In order to qualify for the GABF Pro-Am category, entrants must be members of the American Homebrewer Association (AHA) at the time of entry (February 2011) and at the time of the GABF (September 2011). You can sign up at: http://www.homebrewersassociation.org/
- The winner of the previous year’s competition will be ineligible for the current competition.
- The competition is closed to commercial brewers or to any beer produced at a commercial brewery.
Categories Accepted:
- This year’s entries are limited to the following Beer Judge Certification Program (BJCP) categories:
– 22A – Classic Rauchbier
– 22B – Other Smoked Beer
- Entries will be judged against their BJCP style descriptions. Carefully read the style guide and comments section for these categories: http://www.bjcp.org/2008styles/style22.php
- Entries in category 22B should have an original gravity no higher than 1.074 SG because of brew house limitations.
Entry Requirements:
- Each brewer is limited to only one entry.
- Four bottles of beer (11.2 oz. or larger bottles) are required of every brewer.
- Each bottle should be free of any labels or identifying marks.
- Please fill out and include this recipe form (http://www.bjcp.org/docs/SCP_EntryRecipe.pdf) with your entry. Write your AHA membership number in the upper right hand corner.
- Entries should be shipped or hand delivered to:
Choc Beer Co.
Attn: Brew at Choc’s Home
120 S.W. 8th
Krebs, OK 74554
Entries must be received by 5 P.M. February 18th, 2011. Please package the beers securely to prevent breakage.
The Fine Print:
The judge’s decision will be final. Choc reserves the right to make recipe modifications according to availabilityof ingredients and other brewing considerations. After the winner has been notified by phone or email Choc will coordinate the planning, brewing, and packaging withthe winner. The winning beer will be marketed with a label recognizing the winner and entered in the 2011 GABF Pro-Am category.
The winning brewer must sign a licensing agreement, which limits and protects the way the GABF trademark is used, prior to the submission of entries to the GABF. GABF Pro-Am entries submitted by breweries will compete in a best-of-show style judging, during the regular GABF judging. The GABF Style Guidelines and GABF judge panel will be used for the judging. Judges will determine the top three entries in the GABF Pro-Am Competition, which will be awarded Gold, Silver, and Bronze GABF Pro-Am Competition medals during the GABF awards ceremony. Medals will be issued to both the winning brewery and the winning home brewer.
