COOP Ale Works’ iPhone app

coopaleworks.jpgIn a post this week, I mentioned that I learned about the COOP Ale Works iPhone app during my visit to Zoo Brew. The app is simple and handy; you can scan COOP’s roster of beers and get the vitals plus a brief description. Then there’s a locator so you can find and map restaurants that serve COOP offerings. And now, as promised, here’s  more on the app, via my e-mail conversation with COOP’s JD Merryweather:

The Thirsty Beagle: Why did you guys decide to do an iPhone app?

JD: An important part of any start up business is saving funds as things always cost more than expected and there are often surprises. COOP Ale Works came out of the gate with a very active social media plan. We use Twitter and Facebook to support our primary marketing tool, our Web site. A local iPhone developer, Jake Behrens, who was working on another app program — Foamish — became friends of COOP. Since we already had our creative in place, adding an app to our arsenal was a no-brainer. The app offers a very handy solution to information and location resourcing on the fly and it reaches our demographic.

TTB: When did it go live? How long had it been in development?

JD: The app went live 05/11/09 and we have had over 1,000 downloads already. It came together pretty quickly since our artwork, text and resources already existed. We started kicking the idea around in April but things were pretty crazy at the time as we merged into the Oklahoma market.

TTB: What do you think are some of the better features?

JD:
It’s a very easy app to use and quite practical. A lot of bartenders have it and they can quickly answer customers questions regarding the composition of our beer styles. The locator is a great function because not only can someone find who has our beers on tap, the app actually drives customers to the businesses that carry our products. It’s a great win/win and a nice added value selling to when trying to get our beer placed at a venue.

TTB:
What’s the feedback you’ve received so far?

JD:
Feedback has been fantastic. First of all it’s a free app. We think ours is one of the first in the market for a craft brewery of our size. The locator only works in Oklahoma as our beer is only served in state at the moment. Users love it for the info, retailers appreciate the connection and additional traffic, we love it because it supports our interest in being a community based brewery!

So there you have it. If you’ve got an iPhone, and are a beer fan, you should download this one. Can’t beat the price, obviously, and it’s good to have when you’re trying to track down a nice beer from the guys at COOP.
