Beer-can chicken ideas

Hello TTB readers. With football season rapidly approaching — only 24 days to go! — The Thirsty Beagle is m1x00198_91doing some serious thinking. About eating. Yes, nothing says football season is here like meat cooking over the grill on a crisp autumn day. I’ve got a plan this year, for a weekend when OSU’s not at home, to try out the famous beer-can chicken recipe.

So I’m soliciting some help here: If anyone has tried the recipe before, what beer did you use? I’m trying to avoid using a really cheap beer — so that I can avoid my chicken tasting like really cheap beer – but the main problem I’m foreseeing is that the really good beers don’t come in cans. I guess I could always get whatever beer in a bottle and pour it into another can, right? Either way, let me know in the comments section if you’ve tried a beer you felt turned out nicely. Thanks!

They sell a ceramic container that has the top part is shaped like a can. You poor the beer into the ceramic dish, then set the chicken on top of that. You get to use whatever type of beer (or other beverage) you would like. I bought mine at Atwoods. Happy Grillin’

Very good if not the best chicken I’ve ever eaten. I used Guiness. Due to the caramalization factor and the roasted barley flair of the beer, it worked well. I have been told any type of beverage would work including Cherry Coke. I must warn you though make sure the beer is at least 3/4 of the way full rather that 1/2 full. The chicken will “soak” it up rather quickly. Also use indirect heat, cook opposite side of the lit burner. Makes me wanna cook one now, mmm!

I’ve got to admit I’ve never heard of beer-can chicken… however, I love trying new recipes out all the time so I’ll keep popping back to see which beer people think is the best for this particular recipe.
