* The deadline for entry is noon Jan. 1.

* The Pet Show crew will draw the name of the winner at random Jan. 2.

So, where did this all come from? The crew over at Del Monte are having a special fundraiser that helps pets in need. They’re donating $1 for every person who tells them why his/her pet is great. Really? Yes. All you have to do is go to their site, Power of Paws, and talk about how great your pet is. We all know how easy that is to do. So far, more than 5,000 people have done it. That’s a $5,000 donation just for bragging. So go add your story to the pile!

Stop decorating your animals

Why do people insist on doing things like this to their dogs? This is from the Sandy Paws Grooming Shop’s Creative Grooming Awards.

At right, you will notice a poodle groomed to look like Leonardo from the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. I am surprised this dog is willing to wear a bandana across its eyes, and I can’t imagine it is comfortable.

Below, you will find video of some guy tattooing pigs. Why?

It should be said that this kind of thing is illegal in Oklahoma City. As I discovered a couple of years ago during a fish tattooing controversy, artificially coloring your dog’s fur is against the law. This was primarily because of the practice of dyeing rabbits around Easter, but applies to dogs as well. Tattooing fish or pigs or any other pet is also illegal. Is there anything wrong with a poodle looking like a poodle? Does a pig really need a tat to look interesting?

I think not.

Not to be upstaged by America’s presidential election, voters in New Zealand have cast their votes for the kakapo as bird of the year.

The kakapo won Forest & Bird’s annual bird of the year election with 578 votes, far out-pacing the second place takahe, which got 322 votes.

Last year’s winner, the grey warbler, fell to 10th, while the kiwi, New Zealand’s national bird, slipped out of the top 10 for the first time.

Here are the top 10 finishers:
