Give a lolcat – not a pet – for Valetine’s Day
Even though we here at Pet Show say NO to giving pets as gifts, we say YES to anything lolcat.

- Chris Burney of Bowling for Soup talking about traveling with animals
- The dog IQ tests
- Dr. Phil Mosca of Integris with his dog, Boz

We also gave out some Pet Show awards: best advice, favorite celebrity, Young Pup of the Year, best head-wear, myth-buster and favorite expert. (You’ll have to listen to the show to find out who won, but I’ll tell you the winner of Best Show Title: “Happy Mew Year.” ha)
But Pet Show would not be complete without news or tips. For news, Bryan told us about a prehistoric monster snake. To make up for it, he also told us about comfort animals in Utah. Dawn also gave us some excellent tips for Valentine’s Day.
The modern gift for a second anniversary is China. So here is our gift to you, Pet Show fans:

Recipe – Potatoes Au Canine

We nabbed this recipe from HealthyDogFood.org.
Potatoes Au Canine
3 c. boiled potatoes, sliced
2 T. grated carrots
2 T. other vegetables, grated, such as beans or parsnip
1/2 c. creamed cottage cheese
1/4 c. non-fat milk
1/4 c. grated cheese
Layer the potatoes, vegetables and cottage cheese in a casserole dish. Pour the milk over top. Sprinkle with cheese.
Bake about 15 minutes at 350 degrees until cheese melts and slightly browns. Serve cool.
Note: As a potato substitute, you can use 3 cups of cooked oatmeal or 3 cups cooked brown rice.
Lose weight with your pets

Lots of us – yours truly included – will make resolutions to lose weight this year. But what about our portly pets? Our chubby pals could probably stand to drop a few ounces – pounds even – this year. The University of Illinois suggests these five ways to help slim down your pet:
- Decrease calories.
- Exercise!
- Feed specific portions – no free-for-alls.
- Skip snacks and people food.
- Feed small portions more often.
What does this all sounds like? People! We could all use these tips, too. Well, we probably need to go ahead and stick with eating people food, but other than that, it sounds like good advice for us.

New Year’s resolutions for cats
This made me laugh out loud. I’m a dog owner, but I can imagine a cat making this resolutions. I read a longer version on i-Pets.com. These are my 10 favorites:
- I will not slurp fish food from the surface of the aquarium.
- I must not help myself to Q-tips, and I must certainly not proceed to stuff them down the sink’s drain.
- I will not eat large numbers of assorted bugs, then come home and puke them up so the humans can see that I’m getting plenty of roughage.
- I will not lean way over to drink out of the tub, fall in, and then pelt right for the box of clumping cat litter.
- I will not stand on the bathroom counter, stare down the hall, and growl at NOTHING after my human has finished watching The X-Files.
- I will not use the bathtub to store live mice for late-night snacks.
- I will not assume the patio door is open when I race outside to chase leaves.
- I will not play “dead cat on the stairs” while people are trying to bring in groceries or laundry, or else one of these days, it will really come true.
- When my human is typing at the computer, her forearms are *not* a hammock.
- Computer and TV screens do not exist to backlight my lovely tail.
