Pet advice after the tornados

m1×00037_9.jpg

The tornadoes that ripped through Oklahoma were a reminder to pet owners how important identification is.

Severe weather can rip down fences, pull down walls and leave pets confused and scared. At least one veterinarian is helping reunite lost dogs with their owners. The best way to ensure a pet is returned is by microchipping, he said. Collars and tags can sometimes be caught and torn by debris. Microchips stay under the skin and can be tracked by any vet or shelter official.

Here is some more information from the ASPCA about disaster readiness:

Animals in the news

stink-bug.jpgRead the Home and Garden section of the paper today for some neat animal-related stories. Chris Jones wrote a helpful story about insects in the garden. (Hey – some people keep insects as pets! But I’m not sure about this stink bug. If anyone keeps stink bugs as pets, I’d be really impressed.) Also, read about POUF!, a new little tool that helps remove pet hair. Dear Abby hands out advice to a couple who lost their dog and are looking for a nice way to thank their vet and physical therapists. (Click here to read her column on her Web site.)
