That’s one giant prosthetic
Motala the elephant lost her left front foot and most of her leg after stepping on a land mine in 1999 near the border of Thailand and Burma.
Now she is walking again thanks to a specially made prosthesis that is noticeably larger than your average artificial leg.
Apparently she’s still getting used the the prosthesis but is doing fine after it was permanently fitted to her during a procedure that required enough anesthetic to knock out 70 people. The 48-year-old Indian elephant is walking around but hasn’t put all her weight on the prosthesis yet.

Meet Bibi the blogger
Because we here at Pet Show have a special place in our hearts for elephants and baby animals, this baby elephant has won us over. Meet Bibi. She’s an African elephant born at the Knysna Elephant Park in South Africa. I mean seriously. Look at her:

She’s ridiculously cute. I love that picture because it shows just how tiny she really is. She doesn’t even come up to the game warden’s waist!
Well, besides being precious, Bibi has other talents. She isn’t even three weeks old and she’s already blogging. (I’m guessing she isn’t the one doing the actual typing, unless they have a gigantic keyboard.) There are also lots of pictures of her progress posted on the park’s Web site. You can follow Bibi here as she grows up. She’ll be fun to watch.

Pandelephants or elepands?
No offense, but this is really weird. So weird. But then again, when it comes to the animal world, people are weird. And when I say weird, I mean cruel.

At a zoo in Taiwan, zookeepers celebrated the birth of a panda by painting the elephants to look like pandas. Clearly. That’s the only obvious choice. That is the only logical way to celebrate the birth of a panda.

I’m expecting my first child in October, and I swear I won’t paint my dogs or dress them up like babies when my daughter arrives. That would just be cruel.

Wonderful zoo photos
Boston.com, the Boston Globe’s Web site, has a wonderful photo gallery of pictures from zoos around the world. Lions, tigers,, leopards, bears, foxes, primates, frogs, hippos, elephants, rhinos, giraffes, dolphins, kangaroos, camels and plenty more are featured in the gallery. Many of the pictures are of babies. Here is my favorite, of a cute Chinese leopard cub growling at photographers.

The odd couple – trunks and tails
Ignore the ending – that part that sounds like Ron Burgundy – and enjoy the rest of it. It’s so cool.
