Listen to Pet Show – Lipizzaner Stallions!

tony-tinkerListen to Pet Show! Our special guest today was Troy Tinker, the master of ceremonies for the Lipizzaner Stallions! Long story short, Troy knows everything about everything about Lipizzaners. (And in case you didn’t know, the Lips are coming to town this weekend.)

But as if Pet Show weren’t exciting enough all on its own, there’s something even MORE exciting about the show! What is it? Listen to the show! A couple lucky winners and their families will be glad they did! (As if you couldn’t guess, we’re giving away amazing prizes!)lipps

And Pet Show wouldn’t be complete without our news and Tail Tips. Today in news we talked about a cat that stowed away inside a thrift store couch and English squirrels enjoying chips that taste like, well, English squirrels.

And on a more serious note, we talked about poison prevention. This happens to be National Poison Prevention Week. The ASPCA gives us five great tips for avoiding poisoning in your home:

  1. Keep your people meds away from the pets.
  2. Be careful with insecticides.
  3. Keep your people food to yourself, people.
  4. Check to make sure your plants aren’t poisonous.
  5. Don’t use chemical pest baits if possible.

Freshpet, Tyson join forces for chilly pet food

freshpet-foodSo apparently there is refrigerated pet food. And apparently I don’t shop at a grocery store classy enough for refrigerated pet food.

So there’s this company, Freshpet, that sells refrigerated pet food, and they’ve announced an alliance with Tyson Foods, the second largest U.S. food company and the largest supplier of protein products for people in the world.

Chilly dog food, meet warm people food.

The point is to sell products that are mostly meat with a side of veggies and rice.

Right now, don’t expect to see Freshpet in Oklahoma City. They have products in 63 stores, mostly in the St. Louis area. I guess pets in the Sooner State will have to eat regular, ol’, room-temperature pet food. Poor things.

Miss Cleo foresaw her need

cleo-1.JPGMarsha Jackson of Stillwater sent us this picture of her pup, Cleopatra, called Cleo for short. Jackson found Miss Cleo running down Highway 177 and saved her from being hit by a semi.

Apparently, Jackson didn’t know how much she needed Miss Cleo, who I’ve decided must be psychic. The schipperke’s dander has cured Jackson’s asthma, she said.

“She was a Godsend,” Jackson said, “and the little love of our life. Please rescue a pet. You never know what God has in store. You rescue them and they help your life.”

Why your dog eats poop

It’s one of those eternal mysteries. It’s like “What’s the meaning of life?” and “Why are we here?” Even though we may have come up with our own reasons, it still doesn’t seem logical. So we wonder anew: why do dogs eat poop?

I have the answer.

The geniuses at Pet Comfort Products, makers of all kinds of pet items, have come up with a list of 20 reasons why dogs eat poop. It’s, of all things, fascinating. Here’s a recap of their list:

  1. He’s hungry.
  2. She’s cleaning her living space.
  3. His doggy instinct could be telling him to carry it around like prey.
  4. She has parasites or worms.
  5. He’s looking for nutrients from other animal poop.
  6. She’s bored, lonely or neglected.
  7. He’s nervous.
  8. She’s covering her tracks. She doesn’t want you to be angry that she pooped inside.
  9. It’s a novelty to new puppies.
  10. She’s protecting her puppies. Mama dogs sometimes eat the evidence that young, vulnerable puppies are nearby.
  11. He’s watched you picking up poop and thinks it’s an acceptable behavior. But he has no scoop.
  12. She saw other dogs do it.
  13. He likes the taste.
  14. Her food isn’t good enough and she’s looking for a diet supplement.
  15. He’s confused his low-quality dog food for poop.
  16. She’s eaten too much, especially too much fat.
  17. He wants your attention, even if it’s negative attention.
  18. She’s showing she’s submission to other, more dominate dogs.
  19. He wants to eat more often than you’re feeding him.
  20. It’s an accident. She didn’t know it was poop.

Sleeping can be dangerous

My dogs always do this – wimper and kind of run in their sleep. But this dog takes the cake. Poor thing.
