Scratch them puppies!

lottery.jpgListen to Pet Show! Katy Smith, a spokeswoman for the Oklahoma Lottery, came to talk to us about the new Lucky Dog scratch-off ticket. She gave us some good tips for how to get your dog on future tickets. (Hint: skip the costumes.)

Bryan gave us some weird pet news, as always.  Turns out, someone has a dog named Peanut Wigglebutt. (I would give you the link, but the Web site that provided the list is being a hassle. SO … no link for them! You can’t even find it on their site! Lame.)

Dawn shared some interesting cold-weather tips. Learn how to protect your dog from electric shock in the winter. And yes, it actually does happen.

Indian elephanats and their decorations skip parade

The elephants are sitting this one out.

The giant creatures have been a part of the India Republic Day parades every year since 1950. They’re decked out in jewels and are the stars of the show. But officials have decided to leave them out this year because of their “berserk” behavior.

I’m sorry, but I have to take the elephants’ side here. I’m not opposed to elephants being in the parade, but I do understand why they were acting “berserk,” as officials said. Hello! You’d go berserk too if you were Beadazzled and put on display. No one wants to be rhinestoned to death.

My guess is that somehow Indians will still celebrate their big holiday, with or without sparkling elephants.

Pets in the paper

Sorry, folks. We don’t have a lot of animals stories today in The Oklahoman. In fact, we only have one.  And it’s sad. We’ll do better tomorrow.

Weather cat

Apparently this cat in Germany wanted to give his opinion of the forecast. Lupin, who belonged to an employee who was out of town, wandered onto the set when German forecaster Joerg Kachelmann had just started to talk about the weather. Kachelmann picked up the cat and continued his forecast while the cat’s paw pointed at the weather map.

Kachelmann said he knew that cats don’t like to be ignored so to stop the cat from making any further disturbance, he picked it up. Sounds like Kachelmann has figured out cats and how to keep his cool on camera.

OKC Zoo gators cheer for OU

Just in case you were wondering, no.

The alligators at the Oklahoma City Zoo most certainly are not cheering for the Florida Gators. They’re University of Oklahoma Sooner fans, of course!

Apparently, rumors about the gator’ loyalty began circulating at the zoo. The lions told the owls who told the buffalo who told the bears who told the gorillas that the gators were Florida fans. Of course, this got back to the gators, who were all very upset that their loyalty to the Sooner State had been questioned. So the gators typed up a petition requesting the mess be straightened out and turned it in to the zookeepers at a formal meeting.

Staff put these animal rumors to rest:

Recipe – Homemade Liver Treats

The fabulous folks at HealthDogFood.org sent us this recipe:

Homemade Liver Treats

1 c whole wheat flour

1 c cornmeal

1/2 c wheat germ

1 t garlic powder

1 lb. beef liver

Pre-heat oven to 350 degrees. Blend liver in blender until in liquid form. Add dry ingredients.

Grease cookie sheet. Drop teaspoonfuls of mixture onto cookie sheet and flatten with bottom of glass dipped in water and cornmeal.

Bake for 15-20 minutes.

Note: small amounts of liver are good for your dog but do not let your pet consume more than two servings of cooked liver in a week.

Smiling pups make it on scratchers front

Apparenlty, if you’re a beagle named Hank, you’re a handsome fella.

Ten Oklahoma dogs, including two beagles named Hank, are featured on the new Oklahoma Lottery scratch-off ticket, Lucky Dog.  The tickets are for sale beginning today. Owners of the 10 dogs each won a $200 gift card to PetSmart.

In addition to the Hank beagles, Huskies also won the day. The breed is repersented twice on the card. Skiatook and Broken Arrow were big winners, too. The cities had two pups apiece on the ticket.

The lucky winners:

Fire alarm mule saves owners life

Jolene Solomon was finishing her dinner when her mule, Lou, started going crazy.

She was braying and carrying on, so Solomon stepped outside of her home in McMinnville, Tenn., to see what could be bothering the old mule.

The house was one fire.

Solomon, 63, lives alone and had no idea the house was ablaze. She called the fire department, which didn’t show up in time to save her house. She lost everything on New Year’s Day. But she was alive, a saving grace she credits Lou for.
