Three-legged Cat Comes Home

It seems I’m always finding some story of animals finding their way home after years, but this story I like even better.

Hope, the three-legged cat, was missing. Hope’s owner paid a pet detective and plastered the neighborhood with signs seeking Hope’s safe return.

Finally, Hope turned up seven weeks later in a humane trap set near the woman’s home. Turns out Hope was a former stray who had to have her leg amputated because of injuries. Seems to me Hope was just taking a little time off outside the home returning to her old stomping grounds.

Maybe she’ll settle down and enjoy the good life now.

Don’t mess with Kola

I love hero dog stories.

The Rosen family, of New York, adopted a 1-year-old pit bull mix named Kola after she was seized from a dogfighting ring.

They came home recently to find their window broken, muddy footprints and Kola missing. Seems she chased an intruder from the family home even though she had an injuered front paw.

Now that is a watch dog.

Kola was eventually found and taken to a shelter, where the Rosens were re-united with their furry home protection system.

Glad this one had a happy ending.

Free calendars!

The animal-loving folks at PETA have sent us two fabulous calendars for 2009, and we here at Pet Show want to give them to YOU!

All you have to do is keep an eye on our blog Monday and Tuesday. Each day we’ll have a special post some time during the day, and the first person to comment wins! It’s that easy!

The calendar is composed of rescued animals and their stories. My favorites: Trey the hamster and Parineeta the donkey (shown here on the cover).

So keep your eyes on the blog next week for your chance to win!

Free dog treats!

power-of-paws-giveaway-lo-res.jpgPet Show is ready to celebrate the holidays! We’re having a photo contest through New Years’ Day! Here’s the deal -

* Email holiday pictures of your pet to ccoppernoll@opubco.com this month. We need the pet’s name, your name, your address, your phone number and a description of what your pet is doing, if that’s possible.

* Every person who enters at least one photo will be put in the drawing for this amazing prize pack! The bags, shown, here are packed full of great treats from brands like Milk Bone, Pup Peroni, Wholesome Medley and Meow Mix. (Thanks to the great folks at Del Monte for providing the prize pack!)

* Only one entry per person, but you can submit any many pictures as you want!

* The deadline for entry is noon Jan. 1.

* The Pet Show crew will draw the name of the winner at random Jan. 2.

* The odds of winning depend on the number of entries. The odds of receiving unconditional love from your pet this holiday season: 100 percent.

* We’ll post the best photos on our blog right after we draw the winner.

* Good luck!

So, where did this all come from? The crew over at Del Monte are having a special fundraiser that helps pets in need. They’re donating $1 for every person who tells them why his/her pet is great. Really? Yes. All you have to do is go to their site, Power of Paws, and talk about how great your pet is. We all know how easy that is to do. So far, more than 5,000 people have done it. That’s a $5,000 donation just for bragging. So go add your story to the pile!

Pet Show Podcast

Today, Pet Show co-hosts Bryan Dean and I talked about some day trips people might want to take over the holidays to the Oklahoma Aquarium and the Dallas World Aquarium. Bryan also gave us some news about male penguins wanting to become parents and a woman whose windshield wipers and blinker wouldn’t work because a chipmunk was storing nuts in her car. We also shared some tips from the Oklahoma State University Center for Veterinary Health Sciences about preparing your pets for cold weather. Enjoy!
