Stop decorating your animals

Why do people insist on doing things like this to their dogs? This is from the Sandy Paws Grooming Shop’s Creative Grooming Awards.

At right, you will notice a poodle groomed to look like Leonardo from the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. I am surprised this dog is willing to wear a bandana across its eyes, and I can’t imagine it is comfortable.

Below, you will find video of some guy tattooing pigs. Why?

It should be said that this kind of thing is illegal in Oklahoma City. As I discovered a couple of years ago during a fish tattooing controversy, artificially coloring your dog’s fur is against the law. This was primarily because of the practice of dyeing rabbits around Easter, but applies to dogs as well. Tattooing fish or pigs or any other pet is also illegal. Is there anything wrong with a poodle looking like a poodle? Does a pig really need a tat to look interesting?

I think not.

Cute or creepy?

I’m going with creepy, but I’ll leave you to make your own decision. This two-faced cat, which has been named Quasimodo by its owner, was born recently in Perth, Australia.

Both of the kittens mouths purr and meow, but only one can eat because the other has a cleft pallate. Two other kittens were born into the litter without any noticeable oddity.

The second face is considered a congenital defect.

Apparently this is not unprecendented. Another two-faced kitty was born in Texas in February.

Following is a video of another from Ohio.

Bunny on wheels

My job as a co-host of Pet Show and a contributor to this blog is keep you informed about important stories like this one.

Ethel, a 4-year-old bunny, has learned to get around despite her paralyzed legs after her owner in North Wales got her this set of wheels.

That is all.

The wonder dog!

Max the Wonder Dog will be featured on the cover of a 2009 calendar benefiting the Rogers County Humane Society and Roslyn’s Hope Animal Rescue.  He is the winner of a voting contest to choose the best pet for the publication. While it is still unclear what Max’s wonders are, he is the pup of Jim and Cindy Smith of Claremore.

Wonderful!

Man walks with alligator

I never could quite get my dogs leash trained, but this California man really has some animal training skills.

He recently walked into a bar with an alligator on a leash. My first question is: Why? My second question is: How?

Apparently people in the bar didn’t like the visitor and called police. When officers arrived at the bar, the alligator was already outside in a vehicle. They followed the man to his home where they impounded that alligator and another one he had since it’s illegal California to keep alligators as pets. Though I wouldn’t recommend keeping alligators as pets, I am somewhat impressed with his apparent training skills. I’m not impressed with his bravado.

Get to work, cats!

I guess in these tough economic times, everybody’s got to earn their keep. Even cats.

A Virginia program called “Barn Cat Buddies” pairs homeless cats with people who need mousers. For example, barn owners need help keeping rodents out of their stables. Solution: cats! The program director said it’s basically a “will mouse for food” situation. The people who adopt the cats only pay for spay/neuter and vaccination costs – a small price tag to have a pest-free barn.
