Dogs who love cats
My dog made friends with a cat this week.
That’s right, my little min-pin mix, Heuy, made friends with a house cat.
I took Huey out to use the bathroom Monday night in front of my apartment, and there was a little red tabby cat in his favorite spot. Huey has always been fascinated by cats. My old apartment had a feral cat colony nearby, and there were often cats around when we would go out. Of course, they ran like crazy when they say Huey.
Huey loves other dogs. He has never snapped at another dog and loves to play with dogs of any size or breed. He has a different reaction to mice and squirrels. He once killed a mouse
at my parent’s house, and I imagine he would do the same if he ever got a hold of a squirrel. Min-pins were bred to hunt small vermin, so you can’t blame him when his instincts kick in.
I’ve often wondered whether he would view a cat as a potential playmate like he would another dog, or whether he would want to attack it. So I was cautious as this red tabby approached. It was obviously someone’s house cat because it was not at all nervous about me or, surprisingly, Huey. The cat let me give it some affection and then slowly approached Huey. I held his leash tightly, ready to pull him back in case he showed signs of aggression.
But the two just sniffed at each other. Call me sappy, but my heart just about melted when the cat and my shelter-rescued dog licked each other on the face.
So the next time someone repeats that cliche about fighting like cats and dogs, remember Huey, and try to get along.
