Bird of the year
Not to be upstaged by America’s presidential election, voters in New Zealand have cast their votes for the kakapo as bird of the year.
The kakapo won Forest & Bird’s annual bird of the year election with 578 votes, far out-pacing the second place takahe, which got 322 votes.
Last year’s winner, the grey warbler, fell to 10th, while the kiwi, New Zealand’s national bird, slipped out of the top 10 for the first time.
Here are the top 10 finishers:
Kakapo
Takahe
Kokako
Tui
Rifleman
Fantail
Morepork
Kea
Kereru
Grey warbler
