Pet CPR is as hilarious as it sounds
A little more than a year ago, I learned how to give my dog CPR. And it was hilarious.
I saw a story about the Red Cross in Texarkana offering pet first aid classes, and it reminded me of when I took that same class.
I took a Pet first aid class at the Red Cross, and I learned to do all kinds of things. For example, I can bandage a wound or make a splint. I can even perform the Heimlich maneuver, which is mostly just holding your pet upside down and shaking the obstruction free. But the highlight was learning to give pet CPR. Let’s just say you can’t be afraid of your dog’s nose. If you have a little dog, you have to put his whole snout in your mouth. Yikes. The best part of the class was the demonstration video. All the skills were demonstrated on very well-behaved dogs. What about cats? All those skills were demonstrated with drawings. No way were cats interested in letting you put your mouth over their snout. They’d have to be unconscious for that.
The Red Cross of Central Oklahoma offers lots of classes, but pet first aid, sadly, isn’t on their schedule. When I signed up, the first class was canceled because no one else enrolled, and there were only two other students in the second class. It’s a shame because it actually was helpful, if not hilarious.
