Halloween Pet Tips

dog1.jpgTonight as you are tromping through the neighborhoods or handing out candy, keep in mind that Halloween sometimes isn’t fun for your pets. Web Vet provided us some Halloween tips for your pets that we’d like to share.

- Keep candy out of reach. Candy can hurt your pets. If you think your pet has swallowed something dangerous, you can call Animal Poison Control, 888-426-4435.

- Keep pets confined. Constant visits from strangers can stress pets out and they might be tempted to run.

- Keep pet costumes simple. Some people like to put their pets in costumes, but make sure the costumes don’t restrict breathing or have small parts that animals can swallow.

Enjoy this Halloween and keep your pets safe!

Check out our trip to the Oklahoma City Zoo. Spokeswoman Tara Henson told us all about Haunt the Zoo, and she provided some pretty fabulous headgear.

Oklahoma City pet of the week

new-image.JPGAnnie, a 1-year-old Doberman mix

Annie is a beautiful 1-year-old Doberman mix. She plays well with other dogs and she is housebroken. Annie loves to take walks and is excellent on a leash. She can climb chain link so she needs a home with stockade fence. Her number is 4680.

The Oklahoma City Animal Shelter is having a special event during November to celebrate Thankful For Pets month. The adoption fee for cats and dogs has been reduced to $25. This includes spay or neuter, shots and health check. Pictures of many of the adoption pets can be seen at www.okc.com and www.okc.gov. The shelter, 2811 SE 29, is open from noon to 5:45 p.m. seven days a week for adoptions, and from 8 a.m. to 5:45 p.m. seven days a week for receiving. For more information, call 297-3100.

Slow down with that scalpel, Dr. Fast Vet!

I’ve never been spayed, but I think if I had to be, I’d want the doc to take his time.

Cats in Palm Beach County, Fla., didn’t have that option. More than 400 cats were spayed and neutered in 12 hours as part of the “Op Around the Clock” program, which is in its third year.

It reminded me of a vet’s office I saw back in my home state of Arkansas. It was called “Cat Surgery Express.” Worst name ever.

The cats are basically in an operation assembly line. (Or maybe it’s a dis-assembly line.) Either way, vets charge through – anesthesia, operation, post-op care. The result: a neutered cat who hasn’t even had time to resent you. This is a good idea in theory and in practice, but I were one of those cats, I’d asked to be put in the slow lane.

Red states, blue states and orange states

As if we all haven’t seen enough moveable, changable, color-coded maps, there’s one more this election season!

The ASPCA has come up with a pretty neat map that shows how many people have signed their anti-cruelty pledge. (As part of your pledge, you get to vote for a candidate – Rowdy the Dog or Mittens the Cat. This picture shows them being friendly, which is very un-candidate like.)

The ASPCA election map is really cool. You can see how many pledges have come from each state. Oklahoma is nearly up on 3,000 commitments. Not bad. But more than 400,000 people have signed the pledge nationwide. You can sign the pledge here. The election ends when the people election does, so not much time is left!
