Oklahomans help gorillas in Africa

The sixth annual Gorilla Golf Tournament benefiting gorilla preservation will be Oct. 6.

The four-person scramble begins at 8 a.m. with a shotgun start at 9 a.m. at Trosper Golf Course, 2301 SE 29.

The event is hosted by Oklahoma City Zoo’s Chapter of the American Association of Zoo Keepers. Proceeds benefit the Tayna Gorilla Reserve in the Democratic Republic of Congo in

Africa. The reserve was exclusively developed and created by the local residents without any financial support from international organizations. The reserve contains about 250 gorillas.

Registration is $100 per person and includes range balls, green fees, cart rentals and lunch. Prizes will be awarded for the top-three scoring teams as well as the “closest to the gorilla,” longest drive and hole-in-one contests. Teams must sign up by Sept. 19. To register, call Debi Mangrum at 425-0259 or go to www.okczoo.com/events.

A companion event, Gorilla Mini Golf, will be from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Oct. 11 at Celebration Station,

Meridian Avenue

and Interstate 40. The cost is $7 per person and includes a game of miniature golf and club rental. The event is open to all ages.

Dogs help sniff out pirated DVDs

British authorities are relying on a couple of black labrador retrievers to stamp out the country’s growing pirate-DVD trade.

Lucky and Flo can sniff the plastic used in the manufacturing of the bootleg DVDs and are apparently so good at their jobs that gangsters have put a $30,000 bounty on their heads.

Whether you get excited about bootleg DVDs or not, putting out a hit on a couple of lovable crime-fighting pups is about as low as it goes.
