Pet Show Cohosts Talk about World Rabies Day
Listen to this week’s Pet Show to hear co-hosts Bryan Dean and Dawn Marks and guest host Nick Trougakos talk with our veterinarian Zac Coldiron about World Rabies Day. Bryan’s news items included a Labrador who was hit by a train but was saved because heat from the train sealed the wounds and a flying fish breaking the jaw of a boy in Arkansas. At the end of the show, Nick gave us some tips from the American Veterinary Medical Association about what to do if your dog bites someone or you are bitten by a dog like:
- restraining the dog immediately
- giving the person information about your dog’s vaccinations
- checking the victim’s condition
- consulting your veterinarian.
So until next time, enjoy this addition of Pet Show.

Italians to Create Pet DNA Database
It seems that Oklahoma City residents are not the only ones who have to dispose of their pets’ excrement or face fines, but this northern Italian town is taking it a bit further.
Officials plan to create a DNA database of all the registered dogs in the town and then test any feces left to determine who the responsible parties are.
One of the Vercelli councilors said signs and fines haven’t been enough to keep the city clean, so he’s ready to try genetics. The story states that the test will cost about $19 and will be more than paid for with fines.
Perhaps we here in Oklahoma City should just pick up our pets’ leavings and move on!

PAWS-OK Joins Online Pet Listing
Pet Adoption and Welfare Services of OK has joined Petfinder.com to list its adoptable pets online. The online database lists more than 300,000 homeless pets in the United States and Canada.
People can view the rescue pets from PAWS-OK there and maybe find a new pet. Petfinder.com helps people find pets according to the criteria that they enter and their zip codes. Adoptions are handled through the local animal welfare organizations that listed the animals.
A couple started Petfinder.com in 1996 as a way to help end the euthanasia of adoptable pets and a press release from the organization states that it has helped facilitate about 15 million adoptions since then.
Take a look and maybe you’ll find a new friend!

Owners Must Pay Pet Funeral Taxes
A court ruling in Japan means monks performing funerals for people’s departed pets must still pay taxes on the services. Buddhist monks argued that the funerals are religious ceremonies and should be tax free as human funerals are, but judges didn’t agree. The ruling stated that the money monks make off the ceremonies is seen as taxable income.
It seems, at least for these Japanese pets, that it is true there are two things that can’t be avoided – death and taxes.

Responsible Dog Ownership Day
On today’s Pet Show co-hosts Bryan Dean and Dawn Marks and guest host Nick Trougakos talked about the American Kennel Club’s Responsible Dog Ownership Day Sept. 20 and the pledge that people can sign to be responsible dog owners. Some of these pledges sound like they would apply to all pet owners. Here are a few:
- I will socialize my dog via exposure to new people, places and other dogs.
- I will pick-up and properly dispose of my dog’s waste.
- I will adhere to local leash laws.
- I will never overlook my responsibilities for this living being and recognize that my dog’s welfare is totally dependent on me.
Bryan reported some news about a speeding hamster overtaking rush-hour traffic and a case in Oregon where investigators found 728 turtles inside a woman’s home. Nick also gave us some tips from the AKC about thinking first before becoming a pet owner.
