Cats that can’t remember
Animals can suffer many of the same maladies as people, like allergies, colds and heat stroke. Turns out, Alzheimer’s disease may be another condition that can affect both people and pets.
A condition similar to Alzheimer’s affects half of all cats age 15 and older, according to researchers at the University of Edinburgh in Scotland. The condition, “geriatric onset behavioral problems,” also affects 1 in 4 cats ages 11-14. The researchers are now looking to see if certain breeds are more susceptible than others.
Here are a few signs your cat may have dementia:
- - Disorientation or confusion.
- - Aimless wandering or pacing.
- - Loud crying, especially at night.
- - Changes in activity or food interest.
A good diet and plenty of mental stimulation may prevent the disease, according to researchers.
