Wooo Pig Sooie

I’m not a person who thinks pigs are ugly. I think they are actually kind of cute, especially piglets, and especially piglets like this one who wear rubber boots.

This, however, is one ugly pig. The piglet, born in China, has what many are calling a monkey-face. It’s owner calls it “hideous.” I’ll let you make your own judgments. I’m sure it’s a sweet animal, but I have to agree with the owner on this one.

As if we didn’t know cats are cute

The ASPCA today announced the winners of its 2008 Best Cat Photos contest. As expected, the winners are great. (None of are from Oklahoma, so let’s get on it Oklahomans cat owners! Let’s win next year!)

My favorites are the cat playing the guitar and the cat cuddling a stuffed duck.

But the best one, in my opinion, is this one, which shows Casey the cat petting Gracie the dog. Wonderful!

Animals in The Oklahoman

- Animal advocates are offering a $5,000 reward to anyone who can help find and prosecute the person or people who poured acid on five puppies in Tulsa.

- A Brazilian boy lost a tooth when he bit a dog. Yes, he bit the dog. The boy was attacked by his uncle’s dog, and in defense, he bit the pup back.

Tough times for Oklahoma City pets

High temperatures have lead the deaths of at least four dogs, according to Oklahoma City Animal Welfare. Read the story here.

Listen to one of our podcasts about heat and heat stroke. Our show vet, Dr. Zac Coldiron of Stoneridge Animal Hospital in Edmond, gives great advice about prevention and detection.

Furry friends – just like people – don’t handle extreme heat very well. Even good pet owners could find their animals in danger if we’re not careful. Read on our blog about how to keep your animals safe here and here. You can also read hot weather care tips from the ASPCA here.

Almost as talented as my dogs

OK, OK, maybe this dog is more talented than my dogs.

A friend of mine sent this vide of Gin the dog performing on Britain’s Got Talent. Needless to say, Gin’s pretty incredible.

Watch a video of her peformance.

Parasites on Parade

Today we visited with folks from the Companion Animal Parasite Council at the Bass Pro Shop in Bricktown. Veterinarians are traveling in the Parasite Education Road Show to talk to people about parasites and prevention. If you want to learn more you can go to the organization’s Web site or take a trip to Bricktown. You might even be able to catch the flying disc dog demonstration in the parking lot of the store. Also, check back here soon for a special video edition of Pet Show where we talk with representatives from the council.

A Hot Time in the Summer

Temperatures are climbing which means our furry friends can start feeling the effects. People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals has sent us a list of recommendations for keeping dogs healthy during the heat. Here are some of the suggestions. For more go to this Web site.

- Keep dogs inside

- Provide plenty of shade and water

- Don’t run, only walk, when exercising dogs

- Don’t leave dogs in parked cars

- Avoid walking dogs across hot pavement

- Don’t transport dogs in the back of pickups since the hot surface can burn their feet

- Keep an eye on outdoor dogs and contact authorities if they aren’t taken care of

Get off the bus, albino ferret

Apparently, ferrets aren’t allowed on buses in Canada.

A Canadian woman who suffers from agoraphobia, anxiety and panic attacks always takes one of her pet ferrets everywhere. Gyno, a 3-year-old albino, gives her a sense of calmness and security. She applied for – and recieved – a bus pass to take a ferret on the bus with her as a service animal. For some reason, the pass was revoked in April. Nobody’s told her why. So now she can’t use public transportation at all because of her mental conditions.

Well thank goodness the bus officials put that chaos to a stop!

Not really. That’s silly. I’m surprised people still have trouble using service animals in the modern world. Service animals are allowed on buses in the Oklahoma City area, a Metro Transit employee told me Thursday morning.

Have you or anyone you know ever had trouble taking a service animal somewhere in public? Maybe this is a story worth looking into.

Animals in the news

stink-bug.jpgRead the Home and Garden section of the paper today for some neat animal-related stories. Chris Jones wrote a helpful story about insects in the garden. (Hey – some people keep insects as pets! But I’m not sure about this stink bug. If anyone keeps stink bugs as pets, I’d be really impressed.) Also, read about POUF!, a new little tool that helps remove pet hair. Dear Abby hands out advice to a couple who lost their dog and are looking for a nice way to thank their vet and physical therapists. (Click here to read her column on her Web site.)

Dr. Phil Mosca visits Pet Show

A while ago we had Boz and his owner, Dr. Phil Mosca of Integris Southwest Medical Center, stop by for our Pet Show podcast. Check out the story I wrote about Boz and Dr. Mosca for the Thursday edition of The Oklahoman. You can listen to the full show here and watch a video of our conversation with Dr. Mosca here.
