Pigeon Poachers Beware

A formerly homeless street sweeper helped nab a New York City pigeon poacher, earning a $2,500 reward.

Desi Stewart claimed the reward after calling authrorities when he witnessed a man spreading bird seed on the ground and netting a large number of pigeons on the Upper East Side of Manhattan. Isaac Gonzalez, of Brooklyn, was arrested after authorities arrived and spotted him. He pleaded guilty recently to poaching pigeons and will pay a fine.

The reward was offered by In Defense of Animals, which put up posters offering the reward for information leading to the conviction of pigeon netters.

Stewart is employed by the Doe Fund, a charity which pays homeless New Yorkers to clean city streets.

In reading about this story, I have not come across the answer to the most obvious question: Why would anyone want to poach a pigeon?
