May is Animal Guardian Month

May is Animal Guardian Month which is part of In Defense of Animal’s guardian campaign to get people to think about being pet guardians rather than pet owners.

For me that’s no problem. It seems that my pets, who are really like family, would never consent to being owned. I can just imagine George singing the song ”You don’t own me” and saying “Now give me those chips you’re eating.”

But seriously, according to an In Defense of Animals press release, organizers are working to get cities to adopt the term guardian in ordinances referring to pets. The latest city to do so was San Jose, Calif.

Advocates hope the use of guardian can help change behaviors and lead to the better treatment of animals. The word guardian more accurately describes the relationship of perpetual care between a person and a pet, the release states.

I know that in my case, my four animals are here to stay and if there is any owning involved, I’m the one being owned.

Green Pet Week

Believe it or not, green pet week does not refer to snakes or lizards.

It is an effort to inform people of the danger to animals caused by toxic chemicals. Pets for the Environment, along with scientists at the Environmental Working Group, recently tested a number of dogs and cats for toxic chemicals.

They found aninmals were contaminated with 48 of 70 industrial chemicals, with the contamination at levels higher than those found in people. Exposure to grease and stain-proof coatings, fire retardants and mercury was far more common and intense among the animals than in humans.

National Pet Week is May 4-10 and Pets for the Environment is hoping it will also serve as a green pet week, where people will consider how their animals suffer from environmental contamination.

A bear’s the next best thing to a monkey

Check out this precious story out of London. This baby monkey’s mom is recovering from surgery, so she’s using a teddy bear and her zookeepers to keep her company. I guess everyone needs a good teddy bear when they get scared! Here are a few pictures.

My dog is George Clooney!

A friend of mine here at the paper sent this celebrity pet quiz out to some of us animal fans, so I had to take it. Which celebrity is your dog? (There’s also a quiz for cats.) Here are my results:

Wow, your dog is George Clooney!

George Clooney
