Apocalypse Now: Nerd version

gmail_image.jpgGmail went down today and you would  have thought that we were having one of those blackouts that hit much of the country a couple years ago. Only this one hit the free e-mail service that millions of nerds depend on when they aren’t checking their Twitter feeds or the office e-mail on Outlook.

The great Gmail blackout did not affect me because, although I have a Gmail account, I don’t log in much at work simply because my work mailbox is always full to overflowing.  And my own personal nerd network isn’t so large that I need Gmail for overflow.

So ignorance was bliss for me until a colleague alerted me late in the day. I sent a query to the Google PR team to find out what we going on but never heard back. However, as soon as my co-worker sent me word that Gmail was down, I sent a test mail via Gmail to both him and me at work.

Guess what? Gmail was already up and running again.

Anyway, Twitter was full of angst over the Gmail outage, and here are a few of the better tweets:

From wiredmag: Gmail Suffers Outage, World Ends

From richirvine: For Twitterers, Gmail going down is like JFK being shot

From nahilz: is glad that gmail’s problems are resolved, can’t live without it!

From JeremyBehrens: 1 minute without gmail is 2 minutes too long.

From Kim cre8pc: FYI: I did not freak out because Gmail went down. I noticed it, twittered it and then went and made dinner, calmly & with dignity.

From clickityclack: gmail is back up. everyone may resume normal activities…

Had you been Tweeting with the rest of us “nerds”, you’d have known when GMail was back up & running…preventing you from having to waste time sending a futile e-mail to Google PR from your “work mailbox”. I’m just sayin’! ;)

A number of the “nerds” you’re referring to probably took a break while GMail was down to count the money they make as a result of utilizing social networking and social media outlets to drive traffic to their websites…

[...] finally, when you Tweet, it could end up on some news site [...]
