Suicide prevention hangout

Today my colleague Zeke Campfield and I hosted a Google Hangout discussion on teen suicide prevention. The Sept. 26 death of Cade Poulos at Stillwater Junior High School prompted the discussion. Poulos shot himself in the head with a handgun in a crowded hallway minutes before the bell rang. Below, you can see what our state experts had to say about suicide prevention and how and when to talk to your child/friend/loved one about suicide and seek help. It was a difficult topic but I think we had a really productive discussion.

Well, well. This is what happens when you take a few days off. My head is spinning this a.m. as I try to get it around all the major crimes and updates to our ongoing reports that have occurred over the last few days. Good thing I had that latte. Homicide detectives must be pulling a lot of hours. There were three slayings in OKC Sept. 30 through Oct. 6, including one Oct. 2 shooting death of a man at Adam’s Crossing Apartments in the 2400 block of NW 39 (Phillip Lamar Henry), and then the two toward the week’s end, detailed below. Police are still seeking Henry’s killer but have made three arrests in the two latter slayings.

Here’s what’s been going on:

New details in the slaying of Jasen Yousif

New details have emerged in the slaying of Jasen Yousif on Friday, Sept. 28 in a northwest Oklahoma City parking lot. Below is a probable cause affadavit and our latest story.

Bloebaum affadavit

The victim of a fatal shooting at a northwest Oklahoma City parking lot tried to flee before being shot multiple times, according to a probable cause affidavit filed Tuesday in Oklahoma County District Court.

Jasen Yousif, 29, was killed about 4:30 p.m. Friday in the parking lot of Target, 13924 N Pennsylvania Ave. David Bloebaum, 57, was arrested on a murder complaint shortly after the shooting.

Bloebaum confessed to police at the scene that he shot Yousif, according to the affidavit. He and Yousif were involved in a disturbance, which led Bloebaum to follow Yousif into the Target parking lot.

Yousif was shot multiple times, according to the affidavit.

Surveillance video shows Yousif fled from Bloebaum and then fell a short distance after being shot, the court document states. A knife was found at the crime scene.

A funeral for Yousif was held Tuesday.

Bloebaum is being held without bail in the Oklahoma County jail.

Note from a reader: Are OKC drivers more prone to aggressive driving?

A reader wrote in response to my article on a possible road rage incident sparking a fatal shooting in a northwest Oklahoma City Target parking lot. He thinks the city has more aggressive drivers than other places he has lived. What do you think?

Two men in fatal shooting incident didn’t know one another, Oklahoma City police say

Two men in fatal shooting incident didn’t know one another, Oklahoma City police say

David Bloebaum, the man arrested on murder complaint after a shooting at a northwest Oklahoma City parking lot, was convicted of pointing a firearm at a family’s car in the past, records show. Police say road rage may have sparked the Friday shooting.

Road rage may have sparked a fatal shooting in a northwest Oklahoma City parking lot between two men who did not know each other, police said Monday.

“There were witnesses that said the two drivers were driving aggressively with one possibly chasing the other,” Master Sgt. Gary Knight said.

Jasen Yousif, 29, was killed about 4:30 p.m. Friday in the parking lot of Target, 13924 N Pennsylvania Ave. David Bloebaum, 57, was arrested on a murder complaint shortly after the shooting.

Sources said a knife was found at the scene.

Starts and stops – and an update to the fatal shooting at Target

This is where my day started:

Coffee and a pile of police records

This is where it ended:

Jasen Yousif’s mother, Annie, holds a picture of her son as the family grieves together on Monday at home in Oklahoma City. Yousif was killed Friday in a shooting at a northwest Oklahoma City Target during what police said could be a road rage incident.

Oklahoma City police said today it’s possible the Friday, Sept. 28 shooting in a northwest Oklahoma City parking lot could be road rage related. David Bloebaum was arrested shortly after the incident in front of multiple witnesses. The victim, 29-year-old Jasen Yousif, was kind, not a violent person, his family told me tonight. More to come in the story on the victim and on Bloebaum, who was sentenced after pointing a weapon at a family in a car in 2005 in a separate road rage incident.

Covering a tragedy in Stillwater

“Are you ready for this?” Longtime Oklahoman photographer Jim Beckel asked me this question as we rolled up to a houseful of mourners. Cade Poulos, 13, had shot himself in the head in the hallway of Stillwater Junior High School that morning. On a last leg of an 80-plus-mile journey, down a winding dirt road in rural Oklahoma, near Stillwater, we thought we’d missed the address we somewhat desperately sought. Then we noticed three cars were behind us, which didn’t make a lot of sense this far out in the country. The next bend in the road opened up and revealed the mobile home overrun with grieving friends and family.

Cade Poulos

“I’m never ready for this,” I said. The people there were bringing in bags of food. Trading hugs. Just being together. I got out of the car and walked toward the party I wasn’t invited to. Never ready, but never mind that. It was time to start asking uncomfortable questions.

Everyone reacts differently when asked to talk after they lose someone suddenly, violently. For some, the opportunity is a pleasant distraction. For others, a slap in the face. The man we encountered didn’t mince words when I told him I was a reporter for The Oklahoman, here to see if a friend or family member might share information on Cade’s life.

“You’re reporters?” asked a stocky, gray-haired man in jeans and a T-shirt.

“Yes.”

“See ya.”

“Sorry for your loss, sir.”
