SYTYCD — Nigel hints about a Michael Jackson tribute via Twitter

That twittering fool, Nigel Lythgoe of “So You Think You Can Dance,” tweeted Sunday he was planning a Michael Jackson dance tribute with dances by Mia Michaels, Wade Robson and Paula Abdul.

He mentioned that the special show would NOT be this week but next, and only if they get clearance of Jackson’s songs from Sony and an OK from Abdul.  Here is the Twitter thread, including a mention of a fan who thought it would be a bad idea:

“At the same time as auditioning we’re trying to put together a major tribute to him Michael’s music works in every dance genre for the show”

“Mia has chosen the song she likes, we’ve spoken to Wade. I’ve left messages for Paula. I’ve spoken to Shane. We have to make this happen!!?”

“There is a problem clearing Michael’s music at the moment. We are trying to make contact with Sony to get clearance on an all Michael SYTYCD”

“If we can make this ‘special’ happen it is thanks to many of you “Tweeters” out there who all had the same idea. “Twitter-Power” is awesome!”

“Don’t get carried away everyone. It won’t be the NEXT show these things take time to organize, clear and choreograph. I’ll keep you posted.”

“To the guy who called the idea of the ‘Special’ “opportunistic.” you’re an @#*hole.”

If Lythgoe can pull it off, it would be a ratings bonanza from SYTYCD fans and nonfans alike.

SYTYCD– Asuka’s out, so is Jonathan

asuka-147 jonathan-147

On “So You Think You Can Dance” Thursday: More couples are split. Asuka goes, leaving Vitolio partnerless, and Jonathan exits, leaving Karla.

Of course, that means that Vitolio and Karla will dance. It’s not surprising that these two would go tonight. Asuka, a lovely and lithe as she was, never seemed to connect with the audience. Conversely, Jonathan did connect with the audience, but still found himself in the bottom 3. He simply wasn’t that good compared to his competition.

On Wednesday, several of the couples performed amazing dances. Ade and Melissa did a sizzling Rhumba, Evan and Randi did a Mia Michael special contemporary dance, and Brandon and Janette followed last week’s incredible disco performance with another strong partnership.

A side note: Mary Murphy tweeted about the death of Michael Jackson today, shortly before the show:

“Michael Jackson just passed away. I am so sad and crying in my dressing room, this will be a hard show to get through tonight .” Trying to verify what I heard about a Michael Jackson tribute show.

We’re down to the top 14. I expect Jason and Karla will be in trouble. After that, your guess is as good as mine. Other than perhaps Phillip, the remaining dancers would be really hard to cut.  Of course, I called it for Ade from the very beginning, so you know my choice.

Vote for your favorites, America. After next week, it’s going to be ugly!

SYTYCD — Results!

groupshot1

Watching SYTYCD results show now. I see my favorites — Ade & Melissa, Evan & Randi are safe. Phillip and Jeanine got saved, too.

Wow! GREAT solo from Caitlin! Jason still very strong. I like these two, but dancing solo rather than together.

Will report back after the show!

max-147 ashley-147

After a great opening number by Mia Michaels, and six dance for your life routines, the pair to go home tonight were Ashley and Max.

Ashley’s solo was weak, even though she rocked the Hollywood glam look tonight.

I was a little surprised by the announcement of Max, because he was the only really strong male latin dancer in the group. Now we only have Jonathan, who looks like he’s becoming a contemporary dancer (if Mary Murphy has anything to say about it.)

Jason was a no-brainer to keep, so it came down to Kupono and Max. My partner at the mike, Lisa Potts, tweeted tonight:

“who I figure will go home after the solos – ashley and kupono. Kupono’s style was interesting, but it wasn’t “dance for your life” quality.”

I certainly agreed. But as Nigel said, Kupono is able to take on characters and has such an interesting and different dance style.

It’s all about the personality, people!

SYTYCD afterthoughts and aftertweets

shanesparks

What do you think about the two Shane Sparks routines on the show? Some folks in the twitterverse said they weren’t glad to see him back. Were the routines too difficult? Or were the dancers just not up for the challenge?

Tweets

From Nigel on twitter: Thank you to everyone who Tweeted me at Adam Shankman’s request to install him as a permanent judge. I’m sorry that you don’t like the idea.

Last week’s guest judge Adam Shankman: Randy and evan crushed!!!!! … Jason and Caitlin were great.. Given the choreog. Melissa and Ade were wonderful … Doris sanchez best number ever on sytycd ! Brandon, jeanette… Amazing!

Final couples tonight on SYTYCD …

Jonathan did a dance style better than his own. Mary loved it. Lil C thought it was “bucc.” Nigel agreed.

Next is Phillip and Jeanine, who did a tango. Phillip suffered, but Jeanine did well, I thought.

You know who I forgot earlier? Caitlin and Jason, who did Bollywood last week to raving applause. This week they did a hip-hop number that was just OK.

Last was Ashley and Kupono, who did a wonderful Wade Robson number last week. This week it was hip-hop for them, and while they struggled, I thought they were better than the judges gave them credit for.

Who will America love? We’ll see tomorrow.

Kayla and Max nailed it on SYTYCD

In a strange jazz-pop routine about a prince stealing a princess’ throne, Kayla once again proved that she’s got the chops to handle just about anything. Max, too, is strong, but  she’s overshadowing him a bit. I wonder how he feels about that?

Max and Kayla

Max and Kayla are up next. Based on last week’s amazing samba, you two better BRING IT!
