Thanks to our friends at SYTYCDism.com, we’ve heard that Fox released a statement about Bell’s departure:
Top 20 dancer Billy Bell has left SO YOU THINK YOU CAN DANCE due to illness and will be replaced by Brandon Dumlao, 21, a Hip Hop dancer from Concord, CA. Dumlao will join the Top 20 this week as they compete on the first two-hour performance show Tuesday, Oct. 27 (7 p.m.) on FOX.
“We are disappointed that Billy cannot continue dancing in the competition on the advice of his doctor and wish him a speedy recovery,” said executive producer/judge Nigel Lythgoe. “However, we are fortunate that Brandon Dumlao has agreed to return.”
Dumlao joins previously announced finalists – Phillip Attmore, Channing Cooke, Ariana Debose, Ashleigh Di Lello, Ryan Di Lello, Russell Ferguson, Mollee Gray, Karen Hauer, Kevin Hunte, Jakob Karr, Noelle Marsh, Pauline Mata, Kathryn McCormick, Legacy Perez, Bianca Revels, Peter Sabasino, Ellenore Scott, Victor Smalley and Nathan Trasoras – as they compete to become America’s Favorite Dancer.
Lisa Potts and I dish about the Top 20 dancers. Don’t forget to watch Monday’s show, which profiles each dancer. The program schedule is a little weird initially: The next two weeks of SYTYCD are only on Tuesday because of the World Series. The judges will kick off two dancers at the end of each show. America won’t vote again until Nov. 10 for the results show on Nov. 11.
On the show, I mention the fantastic web site SYTYCDism.com. It does a great job of profiling the dancers and presenting SYTYCD news.
Fan sites of So You Think You Can Dance are posting top 20 spoilers this week. If you want to check it out, look up SYTYCDism and Pure So You Think You Can Dance. I won’t post them here because I think it’s more enjoyable to watch the show (but I must admit I did read them.) However, check out the video below to see some of the dancers I believe did make the show.
SYTYCD is Wednesday night this week on Fox. Check your local air times, and come back to the blog for more news and this week’s podcast!
Ellen Degeneres opened the seventh season of her daytime talk show with dancing. Not so unusual for her, she always dances with a few people on her show. What was unusual is that Ellen brought out the top 10 dancers of “So You Think You Can Dance” and did a specially choreographed number. Pretty cool, Ellen! She mentioned that she is a huge fan of the show, and that she was a guest judge on last season. Season six of “So You Think You Can Dance” premieres Wednesday on Fox. No doubt, Ellen will be watching.
After a great week of dance performance, courtesy Nigel’s favorite routines from season 1-5, Lisa Potts and I talk about those dances, and the upcoming season on this week’s podcast. Listen to the “So You Think You Can Dance” podcast here.
And, courtesy of our friends at SYTYCDISM here is an interview with Season 5 winner Jeanine Mason and finalist Evan Kasprzak.
Can’t wait until Season 6? Feeling like getting off the couch and moving? Dance finalists from “So You Think You Can Dance” teach cardio funk, hip-hop and latin dance in an exercise video. Lisa Potts of the Oklahoma Press Association and I talk about it on this week’s podcast. Also find out about Season 6 spoilers and breaking news about a choreographer.
SYTYCDism, an informative Web site about all things “So You Think You Can Dance,” has updated its list of twitter accounts. We’ve been spilling them on this site for some time, but SYTYCDism has them all neat and orderly. Check them out here.
The Top Four dance it off tonight: Kayla, Brandon, Jeanine and Evan.
“So You Think You Can Dance” fans are on fire in the Twitterverse this morning! A casual count finds more than 500 tweets since 8:48 this morning. And a lot of the talk is about Paula Abdul leaving “American Idol” with the suggestion that she join SYTYCD.
A large number of tweets are pro-Jeanine or Jeanine and Brandon, with a few No-Evans sprinkled in.
Also on LiveJournal has a spoiler of tonight’s show. It appears to be legit, but take the comments for what they are worth. Here’s the link. The first of the two-night finale is on at 7 p.m. Central, with the results show tomorrow at 8 p.m. Central.
Vote for your favorite, and come back tonight. I’m sure I’ll add my two cents after the show.
I don’t know if it is related, but it seems fitting that Ade and Melissa be voted off at the same time. I wished Ade could have gone on to the finale, especially over Evan, but the two dancers who were paired in the beginning got to go together at the end.
That leaves Brandon, Kayla, Evan and Jeanine in the final four. So, to apply my equation of Brandon+Kayla+Evan+Jeanine …
That SHOULD equal Brandon and Kayla in the final two. But Evan is the wildcard … literally! Listen to the podcast.
Evan’s rabid base of fans could upset everything. And I just don’t know what an Evan SYTYCD winner will feel like. Except maybe dishonest. Evan may be America’s favorite dancer, but he simply isn’t as skilled as the other three. And I believe he also isn’t as skilled at Ade or Melissa either.
I’ve talked with some people about the gender factor. Should the dancers be cut by gender? If gender was not a factor, wouldn’t Janette still be in the picture? I wager so.
Perhaps the people behind sytycd will figure that out.
Some tweets from the judges:
Nigel Lythgoe: Hasn’t tweeted since the Katie Holmes controversy. Normally a lively tweeter.
Adam Shankman: “Hey all! I’m gonna be back on SYTYCD next week!!! Gonna be a great show!”
Lil C: (to a sytycd fan) “sorry my comments annoy you… But there are ways to evade them… U can always try the mute button.. Thas what I’d do…”
UPDATE FROM BROADCASTING & CABLE MAGAZINE: The sixth season premiere of So You Think You Can Dance, followed by the highly-promoted fall debut of Glee will launch Fox’s 2009-10 season Wednesday, Sept. 9, starting at 8 p.m. EST. That moves the season launch date forward a week, as the two shows were originally scheduled to debut Sept. 16.
Sounds strange, but some of your favorite dancers will help couch potatoes get off their duffs and move. Joshua, winner of last season, is NOT one of the dancers. But Katee and Twitch are. From the official Web site:
Your Favorite Dancers from the Hit Series Show You How to Get Fit and Have Fun
You’ve seen exactly what they can do on the wildly popular show “So You Think You Can Dance.” Now six of the hottest dancers from past seasons will show viewers how to get in top shape with the release of two brand new fitness DVDs on July 21: SO YOU THINK YOU CAN DANCE GET FIT: Tone and Groove and SO YOU THINK YOU CAN DANCE GET FIT: Cardio Funk.
With nearly 20 million viewers each week “So You Think You Can Dance” is a pop culture sensation entering into its fifth season on air. For the first time ever, fans can tone and sculpt their bodies by moving along with the incredible dancers from the show as they demonstrate easy-to-follow routines in a variety of genres.
In “Tone and Groove” viewers can flex and condition their muscles with Stephen “Twitch” Boss as he takes them through a Hip Hop routine, tighten their abs with Dmitry Chaplin through the Cha Cha and then stretch it out with Katee Shean doing jazz. “Cardio Funk” turns up the heat as Courtney Galiano puts viewers through their paces on the disco floor, Travis Wall gets hearts pumping in a contemporary routine and Lauren Gottlieb’s Hip Hop dance works up a sweat.
