Jason O’Mara settles into “Terra Nova” role

(This story was published in the Life section of The Oklahoman, Monday, Oct. 10, 2011.)

In an effort to save the human race, Jason O’Mara travels through time to prehistoric Earth as Chicago cop Jim Shannon in the new Fox drama “Terra Nova.”

Shannon and his family join the 10th Pilgrimage of settlers to Terra Nova as part of an experiment in the year 2149 when the planet is overdeveloped, overcrowded and overpolluted.

Scientists have discovered a portal to prehistoric Earth leading to an amazing world that allows for a last-chance effort to save humankind.

When they get to the prehistoric world, they meet Commander Nathaniel Taylor (Stephen Lang), the first pioneer and leader of the Terra Nova settlement.

Although Terra Nova is beautiful, there is danger, including dinosaurs.

Shelley Conn, Landon Liboiron, Naomi Scott and Alana Mansour also star in “Terra Nova,” which includes Steven Spielberg as an executive producer and airs at 7 p.m. Mondays on Fox.

Dublin, Ireland, native O’Mara, 39, who has appeared in television shows such as “Life on Mars” and “The Agency,” fielded questions about “Terra Nova” and his character on the show during a recent Fox phone conference call.

Q: How does Jim look at himself within the world of Terra Nova, and what does he struggle with most when he gets there?

A: I think his primary goal is to protect his family and ensure that they thrive and survive in this new place. He’s also been sort of, whether he likes it or not, he’s sort of been made the sheriff in this frontier town.

So, he has to go along with what Taylor does and says, and sometimes he has reservations; sometimes he’s in accordance to it, but the questions that are brought up sort of affect the very fabric of Terra Nova’s society that is being created as we go along.

Even though Taylor is heroic in many ways in what he does, he also can be a little bit autocratic, and, so, not everybody agrees with how he rules, and Jim has to tow the party line to an extent.

But there’s also a kind of partnership and a friendship that’s emerging between Taylor and Shannon. So, I really enjoy the subtleties and the little relationship beefs that we have between all the characters on the show.

Q: From an acting standpoint, what were some of the initial challenges stepping into this role for you?

A: Yeah, well, I’ve always tried to keep my character — I like to play very raw characters, characters who have a degree of vulnerability and passion about what they’re doing.

I suppose the greatest acting challenge was to allow Jim to have enough darkness and even allow him to be more flawed than perhaps he was on paper.

That is something I’ve sort of confidently been talking to the writers about, about trying to keep Jim as complicated as possible so he’s not just a hero running around protecting his family and chasing dinosaurs, either chasing after them or running from them, so that there is a little more to him than that.

I suppose that was sort of my challenge to try to keep Jim as grounded, as real, and as complicated and human as possible.

Technically, the green screen acting can be difficult because — there is something worse, by the way, than a tennis ball on the end of a stick. It’s an Australian visual effects assistant running around with a cardboard dinosaur head cut off on the end of a stick while wearing shorts and sandals running around a field.

And you’re supposed to look intimidated and scared to death of this guy, and he’s a very sweet guy, but it’s just really hard to be really scared of something like that when all you want to do is burst out into fits of laughter.

That stuff can be tricky and difficult, but you’re really at the whim of the visual effects guys and the editor when it comes to that stuff, so you do your best with it and move on.

I think just trying to keep Jim as edgy and engaging and as intriguing as possible given that we’re also trying to make this as appealing for as many different people as possible. That’s always a very thin line to walk.

Q: Can you give us any idea about whether we’re going to be seeing any major characters meeting their demise due to the dinosaurs?

A: (SPOILER ALERT) OK, how best to answer this. Dinosaurs do kill people. We don’t kill dinosaurs because they’re animals, and we are as humane as possible when we try to corral and wrangle the local wildlife, so we use nonlethal, humane weapons to control them.

They, however, don’t have the same control with us; they’re animals; they’re wild and sometimes they get hungry, so we have to be very vigilant around that.

However, I can reveal that one of the characters that you will have come to know, and hopefully love, will die by the end of the first season. There will be a death of a regular character by this season’s end.

Q: How long will it be before the next group of settlers arrive and Jim gets to be the old hand and show them the ropes?

A: (SPOILER ALERT) The 11th Pilgrimage is coming, and it’s coming at the end of Season 1, but we don’t know what the 11th Pilgrimage is going to be made up of. By then, it could be pilgrims, but it could be something else far more terrifying.

Zooey Deschanel finds perfect role

Zooey Deschanel New Girl

Zooey Deschanel of "New Girl" - Fox Photo

(This story was published in the Life section of The Oklahoman Monday, Oct. 3, 2011.)

Zooey Deschanel has found the perfect role in the new Fox comedy “New Girl.”

Los Angeles native Deschanel, 31, plays the quirky, lovable and sweet Jess Day, who catches her live-in boyfriend cheating on her and then moves in with three male roommates while trying to start her life over.

“New Girl,” which also stars Max Greenfield, Jake Johnson and Lamorne Morris, airs at 8 p.m. Tuesdays on Fox.

Deschanel has a show business family background. Her father, Caleb, is an Academy Award-nominated cinematographer; her mother, Mary Jo, starred in the ’90s television series “Twin Peaks”; and her older sister Emily stars in the Fox drama “Bones.”

Deschanel, who has appeared in projects including the movies “(500) Days of Summer” and “Elf” and the television show “Weeds,” also is a singer with the indie duo She & Him, along with M. Ward.

Deschanel shared how exciting working on “New Girl” is for her, as well as other details about herself and the series in a recent Fox phone conference call.

Q: When did you decide to do comedy and does it come naturally to you?

A: I always liked doing comedy when I would do plays in school, always. I sort of would always play the comedic roles. I guess that’s kind of how it started. But I always think of myself as a comedic actress. I guess later I found that I could do drama as well, but I really started out thinking that I was more of a comedic actress. That’s what I really love to do. So, I’m super happy and excited that I get to do funny stuff every week on the show.

Q: You wrote and sang the theme song for “New Girl.” Would you in real life be likely to make up a theme song for yourself or have you done that already?

A: Yes, I actually did when I was 7. I made up a theme song for myself (laughs). My parents still sing it to me to embarrass me.

Q: How have you adjusted to working on a TV show as opposed to working in movies?

A: I think I’ve adjusted well because I love being busy and I love having a lot of content. I prefer to have constant stimulation. So, I like going to set every day and working with the same awesome people. I really like that, even though it’s really long hours and it’s a lot to memorize. It’s really exciting and it’s really fun. It’s fast moving, but I really love not waiting around. I like getting everything done quickly. There’s something really exhilarating about it.

I also enjoy getting to develop a working relationship with a group of people. There’s always a little bit of summer camp sadness to doing a movie. If you’re having a really good time, it ends, and then there’s a certain amount of, I think, melancholy to that. I like that, doing a TV show, you have potential for this to go on. So, that potential is a really nice thing.

Q: Were you looking to star in a television show, or were you approached for this role in “New Girl”?

A: No, I wasn’t looking for a TV show. I was sort of developing a show last year for HBO that was a little bit in development limbo. I was also thinking about maybe doing an arc on a TV show or something, just looking into it, because I’d been on tour with my band all last year and had really taken a lot of time off working as an actress.

I just happened to read this script. I was so blown away by how perfect it was for me and how funny it was, and sweet, and smart. I just fell in love with this project. I guess I hadn’t seriously considered any television shows before, but this was just too great to pass up.

But, yeah, they offered me the part. So, they sent it to me, and I said I liked it. They offered it to me and took a chance that I would be able to do it. They took a chance on me.

Q: How did you relate to Jess in terms of being the only woman in a household full of men?

A: Well, I feel like it’s easy to take the show and be like, oh, it’s a girl and three guys. Obviously, with any sort of plot, you can boil it down and turn it into something that sounds sort of like generic. And, I do think that that is too generic.

I think that, as far as this goes, it’s really about the person who’s having a big change in her life, and these people that help her. It’s less about male/female dynamics and more, I think, about these particular individuals relating to one another.

I have a lot of guy friends, and they all have helped me a lot in different ways. So, I feel like it’s less about her moving in with guys and more about this person who’s really in transition in her life and her friends helping her.

“The Simpsons” website given new design

The Simpsons_Animation Dom_Picture Frame_R3BF

Fox has revamped the web design for www.thesimpsons.com and fans are now able to explore new interactive elements and graphics, stream full-length episodes and check out the most recent news about the animated series “The Simpsons.”

The new website will present “booth” features modeled after Springfield’s most famous landmarks, according to a news release.

These booth areas include:

- The news carousel in the Kidz Newz Booth, where fans can stay up-to-date with the show.

- The Police Booth, where fans can view full-length episodes and episodic clips.

- The Kwik-E-Mart, where fans can shop for books , DVDs, toys and more.

Fans will also have the ability for the first time ever to download limited edition wallpapers and icons and can get to know their favorite Springfield residents by looking into character files with extensive bios and photos.

The website also features all-encompassing show information and episode recaps from all 23 seasons, as well as “The Simpsons’” Facebook and Twitter pages links.

The Season 23 premiere episode of “The Simpsons,” “The Falcon and the D’ohman,” airs at 7 p.m. Sept. 25 on Fox.

The synopsis of the episode, provided by Fox, is as follows:

Homer (Dan Castellaneta) befriends Wayne (guest voice Kiefer Sutherland), a reserved security guard recently hired by the nuclear power plant. Plagued by violent flashbacks from his past as a CIA agent, he must overcome his tortured nightmares to save Homer from a Ukranian terrorist.  Meanwhile, Marge (Julie Kavner) fantasizes about being a contestant on “Top Chef” hosted by Tom Colicchio (guest voicing as himself), and the future of Springfield’s hottest “it” couple “Nedna” will be revealed after months of online fan voting and speculation.

“Pan Am,” “Person of Interest,” “New Girl” among new fall favorites

KARINE VANASSE, MICHAEL MOSLEY, MARGOT ROBBIE, MIKE VOGEL, CHRISTINA RICCI, KELLI GARNER

From left, Karine Vanasse, Michael Mosley, Margot Robbie, Mike Vogel, Christina Ricci and Kelli Garner of "Pan Am" - ABC Photo

With the fall television season upon us, here are some of the new shows I’ve found worth watching:

- “PAN AM” centers on Pan Am stewardesses in 1963 and is just entertaining all the way around.

The sets, costumes and era are fantastic and the characters are intriguing:

* Maggie (Christina Ricci): a rebellious yet ambitious bohemian

* Colette (Karine Vanasse): the understanding caretaker of the group who has a predisposition for unavailable men

* Kate (Kelli Garner): vivacious sister of her younger beauty queen sibling Laura (Margot Robbie). Laura ran away from her wedding  to take to the skies for adventure

* Dean (Mike Vogel): a self-assured new pilot eager to prove himself as the new face of the airline

* Ted (Michael Mosley), a co-pilot from a wealthy family who has his own dark secrets

With some espionage thrown into the mix, these ingredients add up to an engaging show.

“Pan Am” premieres at 9 p.m. Sept. 25 on ABC.

New Girl Lamorne Morris Jake Johnson Max Greenfield Zooey Deschanel

From left, Lamorne Morris, Jake Johnson, Max Greenfield and Zooey Deschanel of "New Girl" - Fox Photo

- “NEW GIRL” is easily the best of the new comedies this fall.

Zooey Deschanel plays Jess, a character usually referred to as quirky, which she is, but Deschanel takes Jess to a level of kookiness all her own.

Jess, who has broken up with her live-in boyfriend, moves in with three single guys, and the four very different personalities start to learn how to live with each other – while bringing out the best in each other as well.

Jess is just as sweet and good-hearted as she is different, and she doesn’t seem to mind marching to her own drum either.

The guys, Max Greenfield, Jake Johnson and Lamorne Morris, are also characters with redeeming qualities and are not of the completely stereotypical brand.

“New Girl” premieres at 8 p.m. Sept. 20 on Fox.

Person of Interest James Caviezel Michael Emerson

From left, James Caviezel and Michael Emerson of "Person of Interest" - CBS Photo

- “PERSON OF INTEREST” is a drama about a former CIA agent Reese (James Caviezel) who partners with a mysterious billionaire Finch (Michael Emerson) to prevent violent crimes using their own kind of vigilante justice.

With the crime-solving element, the enigma that both main characters carry, along with the methods they use to carry out their missions in each episode combine to make this a compelling show.

“Person of Interest” premieres at 8 p.m. Sept. 22 on CBS.

REVENGE EMILY VANCAMP

Emily VanCamp of "Revenge" - ABC Photo

- “REVENGE” is a juicy soap opera/journey of retribution featuring Emily Thorne (Emily VanCamp), who is a new arrival to the Hamptons and she’s not who people think she is.

Her true story is that she was only nine years old when her father was framed for a heinous crime by neighbors he trusted and sentenced to life in prison.

She never saw him again and spent her childhood absorbed with what had been done to her and her father, and is now back at the scene of the crime to exact carefully planned revenge on the participants in her father’s demise.

VanCamp is proficient in her role as Emily and Madeleine Stowe is excellent as well as her sophisticated and cold archnemesis Victoria Grayson.

Henry Czerny, Josh Bowman, Gabrielle Mann, Nick Wechsler and Connor Paolo are also cast members of this beguiling series.

“Revenge” premieres at 9 p.m. Sept. 21 on ABC.

Terra Nova Stephen Lang Jason O'Mara Shelley Conn

From left, Stephen Lang, Jason O'Mara and Shelley Conn of "Terra Nova" - Fox Photo

- “TERRA NOVA” is about an ordinary family that goes on a journey back in time to prehistoric Earth as part of an experiment to save the human race as the planet is dying in the year 2149.

Jason O’Mara, Shelley Conn, Landon Liboiron, Naomi Scott and Alana Mansour play the Shannon family and Stephen Lang portrays Commander Nathaniel Taylor, the first pioneer and leader of the settlement in the prehistoric world.

With Steven Spielberg on board as an executive producer, cool special effects can be counted on, although the main story line’s emphasis is of the family drama variety.

“Terra Nova” premieres at 7 p.m. Sept. 26 on Fox.

Finally! A good ‘SYTYCD’ website!

In the past eight seasons, “So You Think You Can Dance” has delivered stellar choreography, emotional back stories and tear-jerking performances. What they didn’t have was a user-friendly website. In fact, it was pathetic.

I’m happy to announce that with season eight comes a great, up-to-date website, with full episodes online less than a week after airdate, and clips online as soon as the next day sometimes. After struggling to use the previous incarnation, I’m quite happy.

Highlights:

As a blogger, this is very helpful. But even as an active watcher, I find the website is more helpful and useful to the average fan.

Three new dance routines for SYTYCD’s National Dance Day

Hey “So You Think You Can Dance” Fans, or really, anyone who likes to dance:

The second annual National Dance Day, presented by “So You Think You Can Dance” and its Dizzy Feet Foundation, is July 30. SYTYCD judges and choreographers have created three new routines just for the day. There is a basic, intermediate and a “master class” dance  you can learn. Regular SYTYCD judge Mary Murphy shows how to do the basic dance, new judge Robyn Antin of the Pussycat Dolls teaches the intermediate, and the choreography duo of NappyTabs shows how to do the more advanced version.
