“Gossip Girl” a favorite guilty pleasure TV show
There’s nothing much better than watching super-rich, gorgeous, young people who have everything, yet still manage to have soap opera-size problems, for an undeniable television escape.
“Gossip Girl,” in its fourth season, fits that bill perfectly.
Based on the book series by Cecily von Ziegesar and set in the Upper East Side of New York City, the main characters include Serena van der Woodsen (Blake Lively), who is beautiful, but known for her strong inability to commit to anything for too long, especially involving relationships and what she wants to do with her life.
Her on-again, off-again best friend Blair Waldorf (Leighton Meester) brings new meaning to the word manipulative – the only character even coming close in that department would, of course, be her on-again, off-again love Chuck Bass (Ed Westwick).
These two have a notorious love-hate relationship and you definitely wouldn’t want to be in the way when one of them is trying to get back at the other.
Nate Archibald (Chace Crawford) has a good heart, but can never find the right girl and then there’s the brother-sister duo of Dan (Penn Badgley) and Jenny Humphrey (Taylor Momsen).
Dan and Jenny aren’t at the top of upper crust society like the rest of the main cast – their divorced dad Rufus is a former member of a rock band and is now an art gallery owner – they don’t come from an old money family.
However, Rufus is married to Serena’s mother Lily now, so there’s different worlds colliding.
And Dan wants to be a writer and Jenny has already had stops and starts in a career as a fashion designer.
Jenny and Blair have also often been at odds.
That’s all just the tip of the iceberg.
And, any rumors and/or facts, particularly scandalous ones, about these people are sent out ASAP via text messages from “Gossip Girl.”
If everyone on “Gossip Girl” only did good things, or never made mistakes or never caused trouble, they wouldn’t be the topics of all of those texts – and viewers wouldn’t get such a tantalizing break from the real world.
“Gossip Girl” airs at 8 p.m. Mondays on The CW Network.
