HBO has picked up “True Blood” for a 12-episode fourth season, which will debut next summer.

“I am beyond thrilled to be able to continue working with this amazing cast and crew,” show creator Alan Ball said in a news release from HBO.

“True Blood” combines romance, suspense, mystery  and humor as it follows the relationship between waitress Sookie Stackhouse (Anna Paquin), who can hear people’s thoughts, and her boyfriend, 173-year-old vampire Bill Compton (Stephen Moyer), who went missing at the end of season two, and is now being frantically looked for.

Vampires walk among humans in this story, since they no longer need people as a nutritional source due to the invention of mass-produced synthetic blood.

The 12-episode third season of “True Blood” premiered June 13 and airs Sundays at 8 p.m. on HBO.
