Kudos to DirecTV for airing the final four episodes of the canceled 2006 ABC series “The Nine.”
The show’s plot revolved around the survivors of a bank robbery standoff. Each week’s episode revealed something new about what happened during the traumatic event through the characters talking through their experience, as well as flashbacks.
Viewers also saw how each of these survivors went back to their daily lives and how they coped with what had happened.
All of their lives were changed and they formed a bond together that looked like a lasting one.
A standout character was bank customer Egan Foote, played by John Billingsley (“True Blood,” “24.”) Egan was suicidal when the bank robbery occurred, but by the end of the series he had started getting his life together and had become a much more confident person.
Chi McBride (“Pushing Daisies, “Boston Public”) excelled as bank manager Malcolm Jones. Malcolm’s feelings could often be read on this wonderful actor’s face. There is a surprise in the plot at the end of the series with this character.
Tim Daly (“Private Practice, “Wings”) as cop Nick Cavanaugh is solid as well, in a talented cast that also included Kim Raver (“Lipstick Jungle,” “Third Watch”) as Assistant DA Kathryn Hale and Scott Wolf (“Everwood,” “Party of Five”) as surgeon Jeremy Kates.
“The Mentalist” fans should notice Owain Yeoman (Wayne Rigsby) as one of the bank robbers, Lucas Dalton.
Even though the story wasn’t completely resolved at the end of this first and only season, it was interesting to have a little more light shed on “The Nine.”
The final episode of “The Nine” will air at 9 p.m. Wednesday (Aug. 19) on DirecTV’s 101 Network.
