Walter Cronkite remembered through TV programs
Walter Cronkite began his broadcasting career as a sports announcer for Oklahoma City’s WKY Radio in 1937. He was the first play-by-play radio announcer for the University of Oklahoma football team.
He died July 17 at age 92.
On Friday, OETA Okla (digital channel DT2) will pay tribute to Cronkite with a rebroadcast of “American Masters: Walter Cronkite — Witnes to History” at 7 p.m. The documentary, which originally aired in July 2006, features interviews with Tom Brokaw, David Frost, Andy Rooney, Mike Wallace, Morley Safer and Barbara Walters.
On Sunday, Discovery Channel will rebroadcast the eighth-part series “Cronkite Remembers” twice — from 10 a.m. to 2 a.m. In the series, which last aired on Discovery in 1997, Cronkite gives a personal account of the last seven decades, mixing film, still pictures, videotape, music, artifacts, and anecdotes.
The episodes are “The Early Years” (10 a.m. and 6 p.m.), “World War 2″ (11 a.m. and 7 p.m.), “The Cold War” (noon and 8 p.m.), “Television and Politics” (1 and 9 p.m.), “Vietnam and Civil Rights” (2 and 10 p.m.), “Man on the Moon” (3 and 11 p.m.), “The Seventies” (4 p.m. and midnight) and “Summing Up” (5 p.m. Sunday and 1 a.m. Monday).
“It is fair to say there would be no Discovery Channel without Walter Cronkite,” said John S. Hendricks, founder and chairman of Discovery Communications. “When we struggled for funding and viability in the early 1980s, Walter was one of the first to see the possibility of a 24-hour channel dedicated to high-quality storytelling about the world around us. His guidance, support and commitment were instrumental in securing the resources and distribution to first launch Discovery Channel in 1985.
“I will miss him greatly and, on behalf of the 4,000 Discovery employees worldwide, we mourn the passing of our dear friend and colleague who inspired the world with his boundless sense of curiosity. We will continue to live up to his standard of excellence and integrity in everything we do each and every day.”
