Adjustments needed with digital TV transition

digital-tv.jpg   It’s snowing on some TV sets in Oklahoma City, but the problem can be solved by rescaning the digital TV or converter box.
   Here’s what to do:
••Turn the converter box or digital TV set to Channel 3 or Channel 4.
••Look for the menu button and select the menu option.
••In the menu, select the settings, configurations or scanning options.
••Then select set-up, scan, tuning, acquire channels or a related option.
Each box or TV set uses different terminology, but the general wording deals with tuning the device to acquire channels.
The process can take between one to 10 minutes. After scanning is complete, hit “exit” or “return” on the remote to return to regular TV viewing (some devices may return to the main screen automatically).
That’s what needs to be done to be able to watch Oklahoma City stations OETA, KWTV, KOKH, KOCB and KAUT on televisions not connected to cable or satellite.
And keep these rescanning instructions handy, as this process should be done once a month to receive new digital channels being added at a later date.

Audition for ‘Can You Duet’

Can You Duet   CMT is looking for the next Brooks & Dunn.
Actually, you don’t have to sing country music or be from Tulsa like Ronnie Dunn, but you do have to be a duo and audition to be considered for the show “Can You Duet.”
There are two ways to try out for the weekly music competition series, which will begin Season 2 in June:
   (A) Send in an audtion tape. It needs to be two to five minutes long, include a performance of either an original song or one from the approved song list (available online at www.canyouduet.com) and be mailed in the next few days to Can You Duet Tape Submission, c/o Filmhouse, 810 Dominican Dr, Nashville, Tenn. It it’s not received by Feb. 20, it won’t be considered.
   (B) Attend an open casting audition March 7 at the Wildhorse Saloon in Nashville. For audition applications and more information, go to www.canyouduet.com
Last year, ”Can You Duet” was CMT’s highest-rated original series premiere last year. Finalists from Season 1 have already taken great strides in their respective careers. Winners Caitlin and Will were signed to Sony Music Nashville’s Columbia Records, and their debut single “Even Now” will impact radio next month. Third place finishers Joey and Rory landed a recording contract with Sugar Vanguard/Sugar Hill Records, and their debut CD recently cracked the Top 30 on the country charts. Fourth place runners-up Kate and Kacey (The Coppolas on the show) have signed with Big Machine records and will join Little Big Town on for a West Coast tour.
But even though “Can You Duet” airs on CMT — which stands for Country Music Television — casting producers are looking for singers from all musical backgrounds. And sinbgers of all ages are welcome to audition, althought those under 18 have to have parental approval.

Oklahoman starts ‘The Amazing Race’ strong, but …

The Amazing Race   Christie Volkmer from Choctaw was thisclose to being eliminated on the Season 14 premiere episode of “The Amazing Race.”
She and teammate Jodi Wincheski of Houston, both flight attendants for Southwest Airlines, started off strong, reaching the race’s first destination — Locarno, Switzlerland — in first place. But they were in sixth place when they reached the first road block — a bungee jump off Verzasca Dam, which Jodi did while Christie cried nervously — and they were the last to complete the task of transporting 200 pounds of cheese down a hill at Kleine Rugen Weise.
But they knew what to do to stay in the race, and that was run as fast as they could in the final stretch to the pit stop in Stechelberg. They finished about 10 paces ahead of Preston and Jennifer from Columbia, S.C.
Christie also knows what attracts viewers to “The Amazing Race,” which has won all six Emmy Awards handed out for outstanding reality-competition program.
“I see people come on (the plane) and they are stressed to the max,” she said. “By the time they check in at the gate, go through security, then are selected to do more security, they’re frustrated, they’re running late and they’re at each other’s throats. And they’re going on vacation. They’re supposed to be happy.
“The formula for the race spans over such a long period of time and you’re exhausted, you’re hungry, you’re tied, you’re mad at yourself, you’re mad at your teammate and you’re trying to be strong for each other. It’s interesting for people to watch the relationships unfold and how people grow within it. And they might relate to one or more of the teams in their own life and the way they deal with their family and friends.”

Add words to ‘The Office’ Addictionary.

office.jpg   NBC’s “The Office” has a language all its own. Like the “epiphery” Michael experienced.
In the episode “Ben Franklin,” Michael explains that while scraping some gunk off his wall sockets with a metal fork, he got a nasty shock. And when he came to, he had an epiphery: life is precious.
That’s why NBC has created “The Office” Addictionary. Those associated with the show submitted the first 30 words — epiphery is one of them — and fans have since added 700-plus more to the interactive site.
To offer your input, go to www.NBC.com and submit new words, rate and comment on others’ words and submit definitions for words yet-to-be created.
Among the words fans have added since “The Office” Addictionary launched in November are:
••Rid Dit Dit Di Doo – adjective, (exclamation) 1. Andy Bernard’s spontaneous exclamation.  2. Nonsense words used as filler to pretend one was paying attention to a conversation.
••gruntled – adjective, the opposite of “disgruntled”; happy; content
••Jim Face – noun, The facial expression given by Jim Halpert to express disappointment, confusion, or surprise.
••Beer – verb, To give something to somebody else. Most commonly used when the speaker is requesting materials or services from somebody else.
••concierge – noun, a woman who has been trained in the fine arts of fanciness and pleasure; equivalent to a geisha
If “The Office” lingo isn’t your thing, check out these sites: E! Entertainment’s Celebrity Addictionary on www.eonline.com and Comedy Central’s Political Addictionary on www.indecision2008.com/
