Happy Birthday, Fran Drescher
Sept. 30, 2008 — Francine Joy Drescher, who played Fran Reeves in “Living With Fran” (2005-06 on The WB) and Fran Sheffield in “The Nanny” (1993-99 on CBS), turns 51 today.
Her most recent TV role was as Suzy Levine in the HBO original series “Entourage” (the episode titled “The All Out Fall Out” aired Sept. 21, 2008).
Her first acting role was as Connie in the 1977 movie “Saturday Night Fever.” She was 31.
Best wishes to Fran and everybody who shares this special day with her.

The Oklahoman’s TV Talk personalities Penny Soldan and Heather Warlick tape a weekly video for Newsok.tv that highlights upcoming TV programs worth watching.
They’re not fast talkers, but just in case you didn’t catch all the information for a show of interest, here is their script for the week of Sept. 28:
P: Hi, I’m Penny Soldan, this is Heather Warlick and this is TV Talk, The Oklahoman’s weekly countdown of the Top 10 progams worth watching — or at least setting the DVR or VCR for.
H: Coming in at No. 10 is “Paris Hilton’s My New BFF” premiering at 9 p.m. Tuesday on MTV. Paris handpicked 16 girls and guys for this new series. They will compete in tests of loyalty, endurance and compatibility to become Paris’ new best friend.
P: No. 9 is the ABC special “Half Their Size: The People Magazine Weight Loss Challenge.” It airs at 9 p.m. Tuesday and focuses on eight people from Mississippi, the nation’s most overweight state, during a nine-month commitment to change their lifestyles.
H: No. 8 is a tie between two shows with big changes heading into the new season. At 8 p.m. Sunday on ABC, “Desperate Housewives” begins its fifth season five years in the future. And “Everybody Hates Chris” returns at 7 p.m. Friday on The CW with Chris starting high school in Season 4.
P: Tying for No. 7 are two shows with Oklahoma connections. Kristin Chenoweth from Broken Arrow and Lee Pace from Chickasha are back for the second season of “Pushing Daisies” at 7 p.m. Wednesday on ABC. And beginning its fourth season at 9 p.m. Sunday on CBS is “The Unit” starring Dennis Haysbert. He is the brother-in-law of Langston University President JoAnn Haysbert.
H: No. 6 is “WWE Friday Night SmackDown” at 7 p.m. on My Network TV. The World Wrestling Entertainment series was on The CW previously, but it moves to a new network to begin its 10th season.
P: Tying for No. 5 are two shows beginning new seasons with new castmembers. Lucy Liu from “Charlie’s Angels” joins the cast of “Dirty Sexy Money” at 9 p.m. Wednesday on ABC. And Jimmy Smits from “Cane” has been added to “Dexter” at 8p.m. Sunday on Showtime.
H: The Fox Sunday primetime lineup comes in at No. 4. There’s the 20th-season premiere of “The Simpsons” at 7 p.m., the 250th episode of “King of the Hill” at 7:30, “Family Guy” at 8 p.m. and “American Dad” at 8:30.
P: No. 3 is “The Amazing Race” at 7 p.m. Sunday on CBS. Host Phil Keoghan will welcome 11 new teams to the 13th edition of the race, which last week won its sixth consecutive Emmy Award for outstanding reality-competition program.
H: No. 2 is “Star Wars: The Clone Wars” at 8 p.m. on Cartoon Network. This new weekly series from Lucasfilm Animation chronicles the adventures of Anakin Skywalker, Obi-Wan Kenobi, Yoda and other favorite “Star Wars” characters as they struggle against the dark side.
P: And No. 1, if you don’t count the Oklahoma Sooners college football game against Baylor airing live at 11:30 a.m. Saturday on FSNSW, is “The Ex List.”
H: “The Ex List,” which is featured on the cover Sunday Oklahoman’s TV Week, premieres at 8 p.m. Friday on CBS. The new comedy stars Elizabeth Reaser as a young woman who learns from a psychic that she’s already dated the man she’s destined to marry. But she has to reconnect with him within a year or else she’ll remain single forever.

The search is on for Season 5 contenders for “The Next Food Network Star.”
Open-call auditions will be conducted in six cities, although none are close to Oklahoma. Here are the dates and sites, regardless: Oct. 3 in Washington D.C. (The International Culinary School at The Art Institute of Washington), Oct. 6 in New York City (Sutton Place), Oct. 15 in Los Angeles (The International Culinary School at The Art Institute of California), Oct. 23 in Charleston, S.C. (The International Culinary School at The Art Institute of Charleston), Oct. 23 in Portland, Ore. (Portland Marriott Downtown Waterfront) and Oct. 29 in Philadelphia (Ebassy Suites Center City Philadelphia).

◊“The Amazing Race” (7 p.m. on CBS): Host Phil Keoghan will welcome 11 new teams to the 13th edition of the six-time Emmy-winning reality show. ◊“Dexter” (8 p.m. on Showtime): Jimmy Smits joins the cast for Season 3. He plays Miguel Prado, a prosecutor who forms an unlikely friendship with Dexter Morgan. They find themselves in pursuit of a murderer who has affected both of their lives.
◊“Extreme Makeover: Home Edition” (6 p.m. on ABC): In the sixth-season premiere, a new home is presented to a single mother in Maryland struggling to keep her 10 nieces and nephews out of the foster care system. Oscar-winning actress Jennifer Hudson (“Dreamgirls”) and Washington Redskins player Chris Cooley make appearances.
◊“Family Guy” (8 p.m. on Fox)(Fox Photo pictured above): Brian and Cleveland compete for love on the seventh-season premiere.

◊“Little Britain USA” (9:30 p.m. on HBO): Matt Lucas and David Walliams rocketed to stardom in the United Kingdom and Australia as stars of the BBC comedy series “Little Britain.” Now they’re bringing their unique brand of laughs to the United States.
◊“Masterpiece” (8 p.m. on OETA-13): British pop star-turned-actress Billie Piper (‘‘Doctor Who”) stars in the new mystery ‘‘The Shadow in the North” that is based on a novel by Philip Pullman. She plays sleuth Sally Lockhart, who tries to unravel three seemingly unconnected events that set her on the trail of an evil more awful than she could ever imagine.
◊“New Kids on the Block: A Behind the Music Special Event” (7 p.m. on VH1): This special documents the band’s 2008 reunion through interviews, rare archival images and modern day footage shot by the band members themselves.

◊“World’s Toughest Fixes” (8 p.m. on National Geographic): In this new series, host Sean Riley takes on such tasks as installing an engine in a cruise ship, repairing live power lines in midair and replacing a turbine at a nuclear power plant.

◊“100 Greatest Hip Hop Songs” (9 p.m. on VH1): This five-part series airing today through Friday pays tribute to rap royalty, reveals the story behind each hit and provides updates on what the hit-makers of hip hop’s past are doing today.
◊“Chuck” (7 p.m. on NBC): In the second-season premiere, Michael Clarke Duncan (”The Green Mile”) guest stars as Colt, a menacing operative. Chuck must prevent Colt from obtaining the Cipher.
◊“How I Met Your Mother” (7:30 p.m. on CBS): Talk show host Regis Philbin guest stars as himself. He meets a burger-mad Marshall while on his quest to find the restaurant where he had his very first New York burger.
◊“Life” (9 p.m. on NBC): In the Season 2 premiere, detectives Charlie Crews and Dani Reese are on the hunt for a serial killer when three numbered trucks containing suffocated bodies are found scattered across Los Angeles.
◊“Private Screenings: Walter Mirisch” (7 p.m. on TCM): Turner Classic Movies host Robert Osborne sits down with the Oscar-winning producer (1960’s “The Apartment,” 1961’s “West Side Story” and 1967’s “In the Heat of the Night”). Mirisch went from producing low-budget features for Monogram to serving as head of production for Allied Artists.
◊“Taxi to the Dark Side” (8 p.m. on HBO): This Oscar-winning documentary investigates the Bush Administration’s crusade against terrorists after 9/11.

◊“Costas Now With Aaron & Mays” (8 p.m. on HBO): Hall of Fame baseball players Hank “Hammerin’ Hank” Aaron and Willie “The Say Hey Kid” Mays revisit memorable moments from their extraordinary lives and express their enduring admiration for each other.
◊“Greek” (8 p.m. on ABC Family): Hollywood Records’ Plain White T’s return to the series to perform their new single “Natural Disaster.”

Emmy winners get marathons on AMC
Network News Release …
AMC is giving viewers a chance to see what all the buzz is about with marathons of the network’s two Emmy-winning dramas, “Mad Men” and “Breaking Bad.”
The “Mad Men” marathon will air from 3 to 11 p.m. Thursday (Sept. 25). It will include the first eight episodes of Season 2, with a new episode premiering at 9 p.m. Sunday. The series won Emmys for outstanding drama series and outstanding writing in a drama series.
All seven Season 1 episode of “Breaking Bad” will air back-to-back on Wednesday (Oct. 1) beginning at 7 p.m. Series star Bryan Cranston (in AP Photo above) won the Emmy for outstanding lead actor in a drama series for his portrayal of Walter White, a high school chemistry teacher whose inactive life is suddenly recharged with a medical diagnosis of perilous consequences.
HGTV show seeks Oklahoma homeowners
Producers of the HGTV series “My House is Worth What?” are in search of energetic and personable Oklahoma City homeowners wanting to find out the market value of their homes.
Homeowners who would like to be considered for the free evaluation that comes with an appearance on national TV should apply at www.pietown.tv/Shows/mhiww_applicationowners.html/. Applicants must be at least 18, submit photos and make a video tour of the home that shows rennovations that have been done (or will be done if it’s worth the investment).

Producers of the show hope to film in Oklahoma in November, so applications should be submitted as soon as possible.
“My House is Worth What?” (9:30 p.m. Wednesdays on HGTV) is hosted by Kendra Todd, who won Season 3 of “The Apprentice.” Since premiering in August 2006, the show has helped homeowners across the country find out the true value of their homes.

“Friday Night Lights’ fans need DirectTV
Fans of “Friday Night Lights” need to consider getting DirectTV, or at least befriend somebody who subscribes to that satellite provider.
Because only viewers with DirectTV will get to see the “Friday Night Lights” third-season season premiere Oct. 1. Everybody else will have to wait until the show returns to NBC in 2009 some time after the Super Bowl.
But the premiere is not all that will be missed. In addition to DirectTV’s entertainment channel “The 101″ airing the 13-episode season commercial free and in HD at 8 p.m. Wednesdays, a companion series called “Live From Dillon” will air following “Friday Night Lights” starting Oct. 15.
“Live From Dillon” will feature different cast members each week, and they will discuss their characters, plot lines and take live viewer questions. The Taylor Family (Kyle Chandler, Connie Britton and Aimee Teegarden) are scheduled to appear on the first episode.

ABC wants viewer’s input for “Wife Swap”
Have a favorite family from a past episode of “Wife Swap”? ABC wants to know.
For the show’s 100th episode, the network plans to have two familes who clicked with viewers in a past episode team up for a swap. A total of 24 families — including the family of clowns, the pirates and the drag racing family — are in the running.
Viewers are asked to vote for their top two from Oct. 3 to 24 at www.abc.com/. To help refresh everyone’s memory, mini-videos and online bios of the eligible familes will be available online.
The families receiving the most votes will be featured in the 100th episode of “Wife Swap” scheduled to air in 2009.
According to ABC, “Wife Swap” is “a mind-blowing experiment that often changes lives forever.” Each week, the show features two families with different values who take part in a two-week long challenge. The wives from the families exchange husbands, children and loves (but not bedrooms) to discover what it’s like to live another woman’s life.

“She’s Got the Look” schedules casting call in Dallas
When TV Land announced open casting calls for its hit reality series “She’s Got the Look” last week, the closest one to Oklahoma was Chicago. But just a few minutes ago, word came that the judges will also be looking for contenders in Dallas.
On. Oct. 2, supermodel Beverly Johnson, celebrity stylist Robert Verdi and Wilhelmina model agency president Sean Patterson will be at The Fairmont Dallas Hotel (1717 N Akard St) from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. They are searching for sophisticated, beautiful and confident women 35 or older to become the next great supermodel.
The winner of Season 2 will also will also get a modeling contract with Wilhelmina Models, Inc., a photo spread in a national magazine and a check for $100,000.
The other casting calls are scheduled for Sept. 29 in Los Angeles, Oct. 5 in Chicago and Oct. 8 on New York City. Photo ID is required. For more information, go to www.tvland.com/.
