Chance to get “Hallmark Channel Across America” to Oklahoma

594_latestheadlines.jpg   Hallmark Channel is looking for quirky celebrations to feature in its new online series “Hallmark Channel Across America.”
Oklahoma surely has several. One that comes to mind is the annual Cow Chip Throwing Contest in Beaver.
But viewers have to let the network know about the events before any will be considered for the series of short films airing exclusively on HallmarkChannel.com.
So go online to www.hallmarkchannel.com/publish/consumer/home/shows/hallmark_channel_across.html/ to submit an event.
That’s also a direct link to the series, and the premiere episode currently airing showcases an annual murder-mystery event in Langley, Wash. Other upcoming short films will feature the Rubber Ducky Regatta in Cincinnati, mass pillow fights through the streets of New York City and the Rotten Sneaker Contest in Montpellier, VT.

Talking with teen singer/actress JoJo

jojo.jpg   Crazy as it sounds, here is what prompted me to request an interview with multi-platinum selling recording artist and actress Joanna “JoJo” Levesque, who stars in the Lifetime original movie “True Confessions of a Hollywood Starlet,” premiering at 8 p.m. Aug. 9.
JoJo performed at the 2004 Rock & Roll Gymnastics Championships Tour that stopped in Oklahoma City. Also performing at the event was Olympic gymnastics gold medalist Shannon Miller from Edmond.
JoJo plays a character named Claudia Miller in “Hollywood Starlet.” And that happens to be the name of Shannon’s mom.
“That’s funny,” JoJo said during the recent phone interview. “That was just how the script was written.”
Another topic of discussion was whether JoJo, 17, wanted to concentrate more on acting or singing these days.
“For me, it’s important to separate the two, but I also have school on top of that,” she said. “So for me to do three things at once, like try to film a movie, record and promote an album and keep up good grades in school, it’s really exhausting.
“So when I do an acting project, I like to dedicate myself to that. And when I do music, I like to dedicate myself to that. If I had to choose, I absolutely love acting, but music is something I can’t live without. Whether its professionally or just the shear enjoyment of it, I love the way I feel writing, recording and performing music.”
For more on the interview with JoJo (pictured in Lifetime Photo above), read the story inside the Aug. 3 edition of The Oklahoman’s TV Week.

“Dog” gone from Thursdays, moving to Wednesdays

dog.jpg   “Greatest American Dog” fans, take note.
CBS is moving the summer canine competition series to 7 p.m. Wednesdays beginning this week. The network decision was made Friday, which was too late to make changes to The Oklahoman’s TV Week and every TV book that hits the newstands.
The reason for the switch? CBS wanted to return the “Big Brother” live eviction show to its familiar 7 p.m. Thursday time period, which is where “Dog” was for its first three airings.
Over its first three broadcasts, “Dog” averaged 7.52 million viewers. The premiere episode on July 10 attracted 9.46 million viewers and was the week’s sixth most-watched primetime program on broadcast TV.
Episode four (7 p.m. Wednesday, not Thursday, on CBS) is titled “Top Dog Model.” For the best-in-show competition, the dogs and their owners spending time with a photographer to come up with a shot to impress the judges.
Regardless of who walks away with the $250,000 cash prize and the title of “Greatest American Dog,” Travis Brorsen from Perry and his boxer, Presley (pictured in CBS Photo above), are representing themselves — and the state — quite well.

Kanye West, MTV crew pay Oklahoma City veteran a visit

tirann.jpg   Tirann Laws of Oklahoma City was surprised with a visit from Grammy Award-winning rapper Kanye West recently, and the encounter was caught on camera for the MTV News special “Choose or Lose & Kanye West Present: Homecoming.”
The special will premiere at 9 p.m. Monday on MTV, with a rebroadcast scheduled for 1 a.m. Wednesday.
Laws is one of three young Iraq war veterans featured in the special, that documents West and host Sway Calloway  (”Stomp the Yard”) dropping in unexpectedly at the veterans’ homes.
“There are hundreds of veterans out there who are falling through the cracks,” West said in an MTV news release. “They make the ultimate sacrifices for us by laying down their lives, but it seems like a lot of them just get forgotten about.
“I know my music inspires and helps a lot of people, but you can always do more. I teamed up with MTV and took the opportunity to share the spotlight with these veterans and hear their stories.”
Laws served in the U.S. Army 101st Airborne Division and did two year-long tours in Iraq. He was recently diagnosed with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder and has started counseling and medication.
He joined the military right out of high school, but now he longs to attend college. While his military service entitles him to partial tuition assistance, it is not enough to cover daily expenses and support his family.
After sharing their stories with West, Calloway and the MTV crew, the veterans received one more surprise. On behalf of MTV and the Dr. Donda West Foundation — named in honor of the rapper’s late mother — Sway and West gave each veteran a life-changing gift by paying off their debts or taking care of their rent or tuition.
“We surprised them at their homes, listened to their stories and then tried to help,” Calloway said. “Because everyone deserves a homecoming.”
