Random 10 for March 10, 2009
1. Alanis Morissette, “You Oughta Know”
For my money, Alanis peaked with her 1995 breakthrough record, Jagged Little Pill, and this anthemic song of rage and righteous fury. Dave Navarro’s guitar squall and Flea’s thumping bass give the tune its kick, but it is Morissette’s pissed-off heartbreak that provides the genuine emotional resonance. Alas, I’m offering you the censored single version here.
2. Neko Case, “People Got a Lotta Nerve”
3. The Raspberries, “Tonight”
4. The Strokes, “Hard to Explain”
5. The Dixie Chicks, “The Long Way Around”
6. They Might Be Giants, “Seven”
The two Johns — Flansburgh and Linnell — have transformed themselves as troubadours of children’s music, but they haven’t had to tone down their kooky inventiveness. From TMBG’s 2008 disc, Here Come the 123s, “Seven” is just about irresistible — as are most of the tracks. Now hurry up and gives those freeloading 7s some cake!
7. The Spongetones, “Tell Me Too!”
8. Bettie Serveert, “Balentine”
9. The Kinks, “Don’t Forget to Dance”
Kind of the beginning of the end for the Kinks and their Eighties-era resurgence, this 1983 ditty still gets high marks for being about one of the original cougars.
10. The Troggs, “Love Is All Around”

“High 5″ is my favorite from “Here Come the 123′s.”
