Random 10 for February 12, 2009
1. The Pipettes, “Because It’s Not Love (But It’s a Feeling).” Sniff. The Pipettes showed such promise, but then Rosay and RiotBecki got shoved out, Gwenno brought in her sister Ani and Anna McDonald, and then McDonald left in November. She still hasn’t been replaced. So, was the coup worth it?
Update: Thanks to a reader who wrote in as “anonymous,” we now know that a new Pipette was announced yesterday — her name is Beth.
2. The National, “The Geese of Beverly Road.”
3. Brazilian Girls, “Le Territoire.”
4. Deerhunter, “Wash Off.”
5. Thee Hydrogen Terrors, “All Hail the Panamanian Subversive.”
6. Q-Tip, “Getting Up.” As some of my favorite rappers were leaving behind jazz and neo-soul leanings in favor of icy electro, Q-Tip was reasserting his love of the urbane sounds that the Native Tongues movement championed. The Rennaissance is highly, highly recommended.
7. Feist, “Brandy Alexander.”
8. Colourmusic, “Fall Song.”
9. Brookville, “Slow Emotion Replay.”
10. The Chills, “Heavenly Pop Hit.” One of my favorite songs of the late ’80s — the spectacular chord progression on the chorus is the kind of ear candy that leaves a dusting of sugar crystals.
