Random 10 for February 10, 2009

1. Chairlift, “Evident Utensil.” This Brooklyn electro group’s new single recalls Venus Hum’s “Lumberjacks” in terms of lysergic electro made for freaking out in meadows.

2. The Beatles, “Mean Mr. Mustard.”

3. The Pipettes, “I Think We’re Alone Now.”

4. The Yeah Yeah Yeahs, “Sealings.”

5. Spoon, “The Underdog.” Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga has the glorious distinction of having made the Billboard Top 10 — yes, a Merge release went comparatively supernova commercially. Hopefully Britt Daniel will bestow new Spoon upon us in 2009.

6. Pinback, “B.”

7. Common feat. D’Angelo, “So Far to Go.”

8. Lily Allen, “Chinese.”

9. Midnight Juggernauts, “Scorpius.”

10. Cornershop, “Waterloo Sunset.” Tjinder Singh, the man who created my favorite album of 1997, When I Was Born for the 7th Time, seems to be in some kind of Axl Rose-style mental block over new material — Cornershop’s last attempt in 2002, Handcream for a Generation, reportedly makes a nice coaster or can be carved into a decent Chinese throwing star. At any rate, Singh did a nice job with this live version of one of the most beautiful pop songs of the past 50 years. It’s not better than the Kinks original, but it’s great nevertheless.
