Random 10 for January 15, 2009
1. Brazilian Girls, “Good Time.” Sabina gets super-happy on the BGs’ excellent recent single — something to keep us warm while the pipes burst.
2. The Mars Volta, “Concertina.”
3. Ra Ra Riot, “Winter ‘05.”
4. Eels, “Mr. E’s Beautiful Blues.”
5. Passion Pit, “Sleepyhead.” A great video that is far more lo-fi than it looks, and a song that simply kills. Will play with Ra Ra Riot at the Conservatory on March 18.
6. Q-Tip, “Shaka.”
7. Ben Folds, “Hiroshima (B-B-B-Benny Hit His Head).”
8. Talking Heads, “Tentative Decisions.”
9. The Hold Steady, “Take Me Out to the Ballgame.”
10. Echo & the Bunnymen, “Rust.” One of my most-anticipated discs of the year is E&TB’s The Fountain, which heralds the band’s return to major-label status and includes a couple of collaborations with Chris Martin (who once told me in an interview that Echo is one of his band’s major influences). “Rust” came out 10 years ago, and surprised me by being on a par with some of the group’s best work, and early buzz on The Fountain is that the band truly delivered this time. As the recent Spin article asserted, this band should have been U2-big, but they didn’t like each other enough to stay together when they had the opportunity.
