Random 10 for January 8, 2009
1. Petra Haden, “Don’t Stop Believin’.” One of the Haden triplets, former member of That Dog, daughter of jazz bassist Charlie Haden and sister-in-law to Jack Black, Petra is all kinds o awesome in the a cappella department, which she proved a few years ago with her cover in its entirety of The Who Sell Out. She even makes this godawful and overexposed warhorse sound good.
2. Book of Love, “I Touch Roses.”
3. The Verve, “Appalachian Springs.”
4. The Flaming Lips, “Race for the Prize.”
5. Bell X1, “Lamposts.”
6. Stereolab, “Three Women.” The first single from Chemical Chords is one of the brightest and loveliest songs from Laetitia and Tim in years, featuring a great Motown drumbeat and Steely Dan-style horns.
7. Evangelicals, “Here Comes Trouble.”
8. Santogold, “Shove It.”
9. The Brunettes, “Wall Poster Star.”
10. The Woodentops, “Wheels Turning.” Big gears, polka-dotted shirts on men, floppy hair, nonsensical hand gestures around the face, humongous drum sounds — yes, it is 1988. From Wooden Foot Cops On the Highway.
